Educators from across the state comprised the majority of students, with 39 public school teachers enrolled. Upon completion of the <span aria-label=\"Kaohekani\">Ka&#699;ohekani<\/span> Program, these teachers are eligible for pay raises through the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Department of Education.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This program has deepened my appreciation and respect for Hawaiian culture, language and history,&rdquo; said graduate Kari-Makenna Correa, who teaches second grade at <span aria-label=\"Eleele\">&#699;Ele&#699;ele<\/span> Elementary School. &ldquo;I\u2019ve become more mindful of the stories and values behind traditions, and I feel more confident and responsible in sharing them with my students in a respectful and meaningful way.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_214454\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-214454\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/windward-hanauna-mele-3.jpg\" alt=\"headshot\" width=\"200\" class=\"size-full wp-image-214454\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/windward-hanauna-mele-3.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/windward-hanauna-mele-3-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/windward-hanauna-mele-3-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-214454\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span aria-label=\"Kaohekani\">Ka&#699;ohekani<\/span> Hawaiian Music Program Coordinator Kamuela Kimokeo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Award-winning instructors bring their expertise to the program, including Kawaikapuokalani Hewett (Hawaiian composition and hula), Raiatea Helm (Hawaiian singing), Jeff Peterson (slack key), Alan Akaka (steel guitar), and this year\u2019s featured lecturer, Kapena De Lima of the legendary group Kapena.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Kaohekani\">Ka&#699;ohekani<\/span> is celebrating its success with Hanauna Mele, a fundraising concert featuring Kapena, Windward <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> music students, and Program Director Kamuela Kimokeo.
