“This designation recognizes our college\u2019s commitment to environmental stewardship, sustainability and community engagement,” said Chancellor Lui Hokoana.<\/p>\n

To celebrate this achievement and honor Earth Day, the college\u2019s Student ʻOhana<\/span> for Sustainability (SOS<\/abbr>) club will host M\u0101lama ʻĀina<\/span> community and student volunteer activities on Tuesday, April 22, at the Kauluwehi Garden and WaiPono Farm on the Kahului campus.<\/p>\n

“Earth Day isn\u2019t just a day to connect with the land but a day to connect with people. Resiliency in our communities is built through relationships with each other,” said Daniel Reyes, SOS<\/abbr> Club president. “SOS<\/abbr> wants to encourage students and our community to go out and build those relationships with one another in a fun and impactful way.”<\/p>\n

Earth Day activities on campus will include prepping a new composting site, performing fieldwork and aquaponics greenhouse maintenance at WaiPono Farm, and seeding and repotting native trees at Kauluwehi Garden.<\/p>\n

“With Gov. (Josh) Green\u2019s proclamations of April as Native Hawaiian Plant Month and 2025 as the Year of Community Forests in Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>, our campus is engaging our students and community to grow native plants and trees in support of regreening L\u0101haina through a collaboration with Treecovery,” said Nicolette van der Lee, UH<\/abbr> Maui College program manager. “We\u2019ll also be offering free community workshops and volunteer events for native plant propagation and fire-wise landscaping in the coming months, culminating in an Arbor Month event in November in partnership with Maui Green & Beautiful.”[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_masonry_media_grid element_width=”3″ css=”” grid_id=”vc_gid:1744927381296-7ffe81b1-f4df-1″ include=”214154,214147,214146,214145,214143,214142,214139,214138,214137,214136″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
