Woven mats lined the floor and kava, a drink made from a plant native to the Pacific islands, was shared.<\/p>\n<p>The warm welcome set the stage for a thoughtful discussion about the Pacific\u2019s place in a shifting global landscape. Prasad, a longtime academic turned political leader, spoke of the region\u2019s many challenges&#8212;from climate change and economic uncertainty to issues of governance. But he also spoke of hope.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We were extremely thankful that he and his wife took time out of their family holiday to share briefly about the government\u2019s work, both in Fiji and the region,&rdquo; said Ron Vave, an assistant professor at <abbr>CPIS<\/abbr>. &ldquo;Also, on the proposed National Research Council by government to, amongst other things, systematize and possibly integrate scholarly research into informing and influencing decision making.&rdquo;\n<\/p>\n<p>Penitiko Taoi, a masters student of Fijian descent in <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s Pacific studies department also attended the event.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I for one was thankful that we could register the concern that U.S. funded Fijian students face and learn of potential government assistance they could tap into,&rdquo; said Taoi.<\/p>\n<h2>Unity: Island nations<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_213583\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-213583\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/manoa-pacific-islands-studies-prasad-visit-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people sitting during a talk\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-213583\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/manoa-pacific-islands-studies-prasad-visit-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/manoa-pacific-islands-studies-prasad-visit-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/manoa-pacific-islands-studies-prasad-visit-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-213583\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fiji\u2019s Deputy Prime Minister, Honorable Professor Biman Prasad, at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa talanoa.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Prasad also serves as Fiji\u2019s Minister for Finance. Fiji, often seen as a regional leader, is no stranger to the pressures of climate change, rising costs, and political reform. Prasad called for greater unity among island nations and highlighted the importance of values like democracy, fairness, and cooperation.<\/p>\n<p>Born into a rice farming family in Dreketi, Vanua Levu, Prasad rose to become one of Fiji\u2019s most influential public figures. Before entering politics, he was an economics professor and earned his PhD from the University of Queensland.
