The event, with more than 80 participants, marked an exciting new chapter in <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s commitment to building a responsive, integrated workforce development ecosystem across its 10 campuses.<\/p>\n<p>Hensel opened the session with an energizing address that underscored workforce development as one of the four strategic pillars of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There really is no more important work that we do,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;It is absolutely academic work, deeply tied to our mission of serving students and the State of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Ambitious vision<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_213463\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-213463\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/uh-community-college-kauai-nursing-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"2 nursing students\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-213463\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/uh-community-college-kauai-nursing-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/uh-community-college-kauai-nursing-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/uh-community-college-kauai-nursing.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-213463\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kyler Arruda-Sukehira, <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Community College Nursing student<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hensel outlined an ambitious vision focused on greater alignment between programs and industry needs, particularly in high-demand sectors such as healthcare, technology and cybersecurity, and sustainable agriculture. She emphasized stackable credentials, flexible access (including online and accelerated formats), and the infusion of career milestones directly into degree pathways.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Lifelong learning is no longer optional,&rdquo; Hensel said. &ldquo;Whether it\u2019s upskilling, reskilling or exploring new fields entirely, our job is to ensure our students&#8212;traditional and adult learners alike&#8212;can access seamless pathways to meaningful careers.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>A key takeaway from Hensel\u2019s remarks was her push to leverage existing pockets of excellence across campuses and build a more unified, scalable system. With monthly Zoom meetings, the group will spotlight workforce initiatives systemwide, share best practices, and eventually welcome external partners from the public, private and philanthropic sectors.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Efforts around workforce development, much like workforce development efforts across the public, private and philanthropic sectors in the state of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, have been pretty siloed to date,&rdquo; said Christine Beaule, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> system director of workforce development.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Individuals from across the 10 campuses and our various learning centers working in the credit and non-credit, continuing education and other spaces are being brought together through this learning community to facilitate better communication and foster opportunities for productive collaboration.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Participants left the workshop inspired and ready to take action, with the president\u2019s call to reimagine education as a lifelong, career-connected journey resonating.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There\u2019s great work being done,&rdquo; Hensel said. &ldquo;There\u2019s even more to do.
