The University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa celebrated spring with a gift of sakura (cherry blossom) trees from Japan Airlines (JAL<\/abbr>) with the Hawaii Sakura Foundation and the Hawaii Japanese Junior Chamber of Commerce (HJJCC<\/abbr>) in March at the Magoon Research Facility in M\u0101noa Valley. <\/p>\n

The three sakura trees commemorate the continued partnership between UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and JAL<\/abbr> and highlight UH<\/abbr>\u2019s engagement with the global community. The event was also an opportunity for JAL<\/abbr> to strengthen relations and ties to other community networks.<\/p>\n

UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa partners included the Office of the Provost, campus arboretum and landscaping services. Representatives from JAL<\/abbr>, Hawaii Sakura Foundation, HJJCC<\/abbr>, the Consulate-General of Japan in Honolulu, Cherry Blossom Festival and Gendai Haiku Association attended the ceremony.<\/p>\n

“Sakura are globally iconic because of people\u2019s connections to it,” said UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Campus Arboretum Curator N\u014dweo Kai. ”As demonstrated [at the planting], sakura has the power to bring a variety of folks together and reverently inviting all to connect with each other.”<\/p>\n

This year marks 70 years of JAL<\/abbr>\u02bbs support of the HJJCC<\/abbr> and Cherry Blossom Festival, in addition to their commitment to community engagement and environmental stewardship.<\/p>\n
