The program provided an immersive learning experience focused on El Ni&#241;o-Southern Oscillation (<abbr>ENSO<\/abbr>), a climate pattern that influences global weather.<\/p>\n<p>This year marks the 50th anniversary of key milestones in <abbr>ENSO<\/abbr> research, including the work of Klaus Wyrtki, the late renowned oceanographer from <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. Afternoons featured student presentations, hands-on training and collaborative research projects. Rodrigues, a professor of physical oceanography at the Federal University of Santa Catarina in Brazil was one of the lecturers, and talked about <abbr>ENSO<\/abbr>\u2019s impacts on weather extremes, etc.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It was a great experience to spend more than a week with students, earlier career researchers and many of the most prominent experts on <abbr>ENSO<\/abbr>,&rdquo; Rodrigues said. &ldquo;I learned more about past <abbr>ENSO<\/abbr> from paleoclimate records and about future <abbr>ENSO<\/abbr> from climate projections.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/manoa-soest-enso-winter-school-coconut-island-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people standing and talking dockside\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-212729\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/manoa-soest-enso-winter-school-coconut-island-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/manoa-soest-enso-winter-school-coconut-island-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/manoa-soest-enso-winter-school-coconut-island.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>J&#233;r&#244;me Vialard, a senior scientist at Institut de Recherche pour le D&#233;veloppement in Paris, added, &ldquo;I have worked on <abbr>ENSO<\/abbr> for almost 30 years, but found the lectures of other instructors useful.
