We want it to be a conversation starter, a history lesson in the form of a coin for non-Hawaiians and people who don\u2019t know our story.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2><span aria-label=\"Olelo\">&#699;&#332;lelo<\/span> preserver<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_212671\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-212671\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/hilo-pukui-coin-3.jpg\" alt=\"person sitting at a desk\" width=\"250\" class=\"size-full wp-image-212671\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/hilo-pukui-coin-3.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/hilo-pukui-coin-3-130x100.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-212671\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pukui working at the Bishop Museum.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Pukui (1895&#8211;1986) is best known for preserving <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> (Hawaiian language) and culture.<\/p>\n<p>She is renowned for her groundbreaking work at the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum, where she contributed to foundational resources such as the <em>Hawaiian Dictionary<\/em>, <em>Native Planters in Old Hawaii<\/em> and <em><span aria-label=\"Olelo\">&#699;&#332;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Noeau\">No&#699;eau<\/span>: Hawaiian Proverbs and Poetical Sayings<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Her book series <em>N&#257;n&#257; I Ke Kumu<\/em>, featured on the new coin, explores Hawaiian beliefs and customs.<\/p>\n<h2>Memories of T&#363;t&#363;<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_212670\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-212670\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/hilo-pukui-coin-2.jpg\" alt=\"person holding baby\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" class=\"size-full wp-image-212670\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/hilo-pukui-coin-2.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/hilo-pukui-coin-2-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-212670\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pukui and infant great-granddaughter Pele Suganuma Harman.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The coin\u2019s design was chosen by Pukui\u2019s family and features her with a hibiscus in her hair, wearing a <span aria-label=\"muumuu\">mu&#699;umu&#699;u<\/span> and kukui nut lei.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;When we think of our t&#363;t&#363;&#8212;I think many Native Hawaiians think of their t&#363;t&#363;&#8212;she does have a flower and wears a <span aria-label=\"muumuu\">mu&#699;umu&#699;u<\/span> (long dress) and a lei,&rdquo; said Harman.<\/p>\n<p>One design detail was especially intentional. The book title <em>N&#257;n&#257; I Ke Kumu<\/em> appears without an English translation.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We wanted people to delve deeper and think, &lsquo;What language is this? Kanikapila will follow at 4:15 p.m. on the library l&#257;nai, with <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo faculty, staff and alumni of <a href=\"https:\/\/olelo.hawaii.edu\/\">Ka Haka <span aria-label=\"Ula\">&#699;Ula<\/span> O <span aria-label=\"Keelikolani\">Ke&#699;elik&#333;lani<\/span><\/a> College of Hawaiian Language such as <span aria-label=\"Kaiuokalani\">Ka&#699;iuokalani<\/span> Damas, Kainani Kahaunaele, Bruce Torres-Fischer and Kaliko Trapp leading participants in performing musical compositions by Pukui. Hula will also be shared by h&#257;lau and Hawaiian language students.<\/p>\n<p>For Harman, the timing of the coin\u2019s release holds extra significance. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is the first time in our history when more Hawaiians live outside of the state than reside in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>,&rdquo; said Harman. &ldquo;I think especially for those Hawaiians who are all over the world as part of the diaspora, for our people to be honored in this way is really important.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><a
