The Pihana <abbr>ABCs<\/abbr> app is a free interactive alphabet primer and coloring book, designed to support the development of key early literacy skills.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The app is a wonderful educational tool to help children develop foundational early literacy skills addressed in the common core state standards for English arts and Lliteracy,&rdquo; said <abbr>CRDG<\/abbr>&#8217;s <strong>Hugh Dunn<\/strong>. &ldquo;It incorporates concepts about print, phonemic awareness, alphabetic understanding and vocabulary development.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Much more than a coloring tool, Pihana ABCs features a new letter on each page with playful alliterative phrases and illustrations that reflect <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s culture. It is available for free download from <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/pihana-abcs\/id701903892?mt=8\">iTunes<\/a> (<abbr>iOS<\/abbr>) or <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.tapiki.crdgliteracy\">Google Play<\/a> (Android).<\/p>\n<h2>More on Pihana ABCs<\/h2>\n<p>Pihana <abbr>ABCs<\/abbr> was developed by the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/crdg\/research-development\/research-programs\/native-hawaiian-education\/nhe-piha-pono-brief\/\">Piha Pono project<\/a>, which is funded by the <abbr>U.S<\/abbr>. Department of Education under the <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/programs\/nathawaiian\/applicant.html\">Native Hawaiian Education Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Like the original paperback rendition, this app is a collaborative product of <abbr>CRDG<\/abbr>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhm.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa<\/a>, and the Office of Curriculum, Instruction and Student Support, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiipublicschools.org\/Pages\/home.aspx\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Department of Education<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The paperback version has been widely disseminated and used throughout elementary schools in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.
