Jena Funakoshi, a PhD student, and Carrie Soo Hoo, a research associate with the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/publichealth\/\">Department of Public Health Sciences<\/a> (previously known as the Office of Public Health Studies), were named 2024&#8211;2025 Student\/Early Career Fellows in the Physical Activity Section of the American Public Health Association (<abbr>APHA<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p>This one-year fellowship pairs emerging public health professionals with mentors from <abbr>APHA<\/abbr>, providing opportunities to develop research manuscripts, conference abstracts, policy statements, or practice-based resources.<\/p>\n<h2>Culture, physical activity, community well-being<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>I aim to create an impactful product that serves our local communities here in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.<br \/>&#8212;Jena Funakoshi<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Funakoshi and Soo Hoo\u2019s research focus on culturally and regionally relevant physical activities and community well-being. They have both been mentored by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/04\/04\/public-health-doh-postdoc-scholar\/\">Simone Schmid<\/a>, a postdoctoral researcher with <abbr>DPHS<\/abbr> and the H<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Department of Health, as part of a collaborative team led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2024\/07\/23\/endowed-chair-in-public-health\/\">Tetine Sentell<\/a>, professor in public health. <\/p>\n<p>As part of her master of public health practicum, Funakoshi contributed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2024\/03\/11\/measuring-outrigger-canoe-paddling-intensity\/\">Access<abbr>MET<\/abbr>s: Paddle for Science<\/a>, a project assessing the metabolic equivalents (<abbr>MET<\/abbr>s) of outrigger canoe paddling for individuals with and without spinal cord injuries. She assisted with project planning, data collection and community report-back events. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I am honored to have this opportunity to learn from experts and connect with leading public health professionals through <abbr>APHA<\/abbr>&#8212;an experience made possible by the support of the faculty and staff at the Department of Public Health Sciences,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;I aim to create an impactful product that serves our local communities here in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and may also help guide my dissertation work.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I am excited to continue learning from public health professionals as I grow in this field.<br \/>&#8212;Carrie Soo Hoo<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Soo Hoo\u2019s research focuses on the relationship between social connection and physical activity and its impact on well-being. She has supported studies on <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11516363\/\">culturally relevant physical activities<\/a>\u2014including hula, paddling, spearfishing, and surfing\u2014helping explore their deeper meanings using the social-ecological model. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I am incredibly grateful for the mentorship and learning opportunities I have gained while working at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s Department of Public Health Sciences,&rdquo; Soo Hoo said. &ldquo;I am excited for this fellowship opportunity to continue connecting with and learning from public health professionals as I grow in this field.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Funakoshi and Soo Hoo will collaborate with national experts and contribute to initiatives supporting physical activity as a key component of public health.
