O. Santos, the book is structured as a riddle, guiding children through the significance of language as a defining element of humanity. Hawaiian is the first Native American language and the first Pacific Island language in which the book has been published.<\/p>\n<h2>A playful language<\/h2>\n<p>The Hawaiian adaptation was crafted by <span aria-label=\"Kaiuokalani\">Ka&#699;iuokalani<\/span> Damas, an assistant professor of Hawaiian and Hawaiian studies at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo, in collaboration with his wife <span aria-label=\"Kauilani\">Kau&#699;ilani<\/span>, a teacher at <span aria-label=\"Nawahiokalaniopuu\">N&#257;wah&#299;okalani&#699;&#333;pu&#699;u<\/span> Hawaiian medium school. The couple is raising their daughters as first-language Hawaiian speakers. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Hawaiian is a playful language, rich with wit and double meanings,&rdquo; Damas explained. &ldquo;This book highlights the critical role of language in human identity while introducing young Hawaiian speakers to the joy of riddles and wordplay.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Language preservation<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_211112\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-211112\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/hilo-olelo-childrens-book-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Child reading to classmates\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-211112\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/hilo-olelo-childrens-book-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/hilo-olelo-childrens-book-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/hilo-olelo-childrens-book-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-211112\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kindergarteners at Ke Kula O <span aria-label=\"Nawahiokalaniopuu\">N&#257;wah&#299;okalani&#699;&#333;pu&#699;u<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Hawaiian edition joins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.authorvictorsantos.com\/#\/whatmakesushuman\/\">other Indigenous language versions<\/a>, such as Mapuzungun of the Mapuche in Chile and H&#241;&#228;h&#241;&#252; of the Otom&#237; in Mexico. <abbr>UNESCO<\/abbr>\u2019s Indigenous Languages Decade highlights the urgency of language preservation.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo\u2019s Hawaiian Language College leads national revitalization efforts through the National Native American Language Resource Center. <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s 4,000&#43; students in Hawaiian medium schools mark a dramatic resurgence from fewer than 50 child speakers just 40 years ago, making it the largest initiative of its kind for a Native American language.<\/p>\n<p>Early literacy is critical in growing the next generation of Hawaiian speakers. Hawaiian medium preschoolers learn to read two years earlier than their English-medium peers through the Hakalama method, a syllable-based system designed for Hawaiian\u2019s unique structure. This approach fosters strong literacy skills and long-term fluency.<\/p>\n<p>The final production of <em>I Kanaka Mai I Ke Aha?<\/em> was completed through <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/catalog\/hale-kuamoo-center-for-hawaiian-language\">Hale <span aria-label=\"Kuamoo\">Kuamo&#699;o<\/span> Hawaiian Language Center<\/a> at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo.
