Hosted by the Black Student Association (<abbr>BSA<\/abbr>) and Sister Circle at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, on-campus activities such as film screenings, athletic recognition nights and a <span aria-label=\"loi\">lo&#699;i<\/span> workday help recognize and support Black History Month.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_208340\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-208340\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/manoa-chemistry-alice-ball-bust-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"bust of Alice ball with lei\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-208340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/manoa-chemistry-alice-ball-bust-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/manoa-chemistry-alice-ball-bust-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/manoa-chemistry-alice-ball-bust.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-208340\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alice Augusta Ball sculpture<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;February is an opportunity for us to highlight Black culture, history and achievements, but also a chance to have deeper discussions,&rdquo; said LaJoya Shelly, founding <abbr>BSA<\/abbr> member and current alumni advisor. &ldquo;We hope these events inspire our <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <span aria-label=\"ohana\">&#699;ohana<\/span> to learn more about Black diaspora communities, culture and experiences that shape the society we live in today.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Among the events is an annual remembrance walk and celebration for Alice Augusta Ball, a 1915 <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa graduate who was the first woman and African American in <abbr>UH<\/abbr> history to earn a master\u2019s degree in chemistry. Menu includes fried chicken, baked mac and cheese, sweet potatoes and cornbread. Vegan menu includes jambalaya with plant-based sausage, Hoppin John (black-eyed peas with plant-based bacon) and cornbread. Ball Remembrance Walk and <em>The Ball Method<\/em> screening with Graduate Professional Access and <abbr>NHSS<\/abbr>, 9:30 a.m., <abbr>NHSS<\/abbr>, <abbr>QLC<\/abbr> 113<\/strong><br \/>\nThe 3rd annual Alice A. Ball Remembrance Walk to honor Ball, the university\u2019s first Black graduate, and her contributions to science. Following the walk will be a screening of <em>The Ball Method<\/em>, a film that recounts Ball\u2019s story as she fought against racial and gender barriers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>February 28: Alice Augusta Ball Day Celebration, 10 a.m., Chaulmoogra tree at Bachman Hall<\/strong><br \/>\nThe campus community is invited to celebrate Alice Augusta Ball Day, honoring Ball\u2019s achievements. The program will include <abbr>UH<\/abbr> and community speakers. Individuals are welcome to bring a flower or lei to place at the bronze plaque created in memory of Alice Ball.
