From a young age, Rainer Kiessling knew he wanted to pursue architecture, setting his sights on the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Mānoa\u2019s School of Architecture<\/a>, where he earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in environmental design.<\/p>\n[vc_video link=”https:\/\/youtube.com\/shorts\/41XvXKELyu0″ el_aspect=”916″ align=”right” el_id=”wrap-video-right”]\n

Kiessling, who went on to earn a doctor of architecture degree from UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa in 2024, has turned his passion into a profession, and is working as a designer at G70, a leading design firm in Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n

“My bachelor of environmental design was really a surface-level introduction to architecture, but I think it was really useful because we learned a lot about sustainability and design specific to Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>,” Kiessling said. “Whereas my doctor of architecture was much more focused on the logistics of the profession, exploring the systems and nuances that are crucial to understanding the field at a deeper level.”<\/p>\n

The School of Architecture\u2019s innovative practicum program allowed Kiessling to intern at G70 during the COVID-19 pandemic. That opportunity seamlessly transitioned into a full-time position upon graduation.<\/p>\n

“My advice is to be a sponge\u2014learn from all the different experiences and people around you,” Kiessling said. “Understanding that where you stand as a young alumni is really a great place to be.”<\/p>\n

Beyond academics, Kiessling also credits UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s faculty and mentorship programs for guiding him toward success.<\/p>\n

“Studying in Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> was invaluable,” he said. “I think creativity and technical skills go hand and hand together and you have to have both at the same time to come up with a great design.”<\/p>\n
