At the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, <abbr>CTE<\/abbr> programs play a crucial role in meeting the workforce demands of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_193364\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-193364\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/honolulu-cte-summer1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Two students at a computer\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-193364\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/honolulu-cte-summer1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/honolulu-cte-summer1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/honolulu-cte-summer1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-193364\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Summer <abbr>CTE<\/abbr> Academy: Computer Science<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hah.org\/2024-healthcare-workforce-report\">recent report from the Healthcare Association of Hawaii<\/a>, for example, identifies 1,228 openings in the nursing professions (RN, LPN, APRN), down 11% from 2022. <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> offers nursing preparation programs at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, Kapi\u02bbolani and Kaua\u02bbi Community Colleges, and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Maui College, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/p>\n<p>Workforce development is one of the four imperatives of the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/strategic-plan\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> System\u2019s Âé¶¹´«Ã½ for 2023-2029<\/a><\/em>. Leading this charge is the systemwide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/offices\/vp-academic-strategy\/academic-programs-and-policy\/workforce-development\/\">Office of Workforce Development<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/hawaii-good-jobs-hawaii-cmv-horizontal-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"person operating forklift\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-180796\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/hawaii-good-jobs-hawaii-cmv-horizontal-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/hawaii-good-jobs-hawaii-cmv-horizontal-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/hawaii-good-jobs-hawaii-cmv-horizontal.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This <abbr>UH<\/abbr> imperative drives my work with colleagues across the 10 <abbr>UH<\/abbr> campuses and in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s public and private sectors,&rdquo; said Christine Beaule, director of workforce development. &ldquo;We also work closely with <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/offices\/vp-academic-strategy\/hawaii-p-20\/\">P&#8211;20 Partnerships for Education<\/a>, a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> office under the vice president of academic strategy that provides statewide leadership and coordination of <abbr>CTE<\/abbr> programs in the state.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The Office of Workforce Development fosters deeper engagement between <abbr>UH<\/abbr> and employers. This includes active partnerships with the Chamber of Commerce <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, service on various boards and committees, and the development of sector partnerships, such as a new transportation sector initiative.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> workforce development initiatives include:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/offices\/vp-academic-strategy\/uh-internships\/\">Internships<\/a>: including a series of disciplinary meet-and-greet events for students, faculty, employers and internship hosts in the community<\/li>\n<li>A pilot of the <a href=\"https:\/\/workplus.asu.edu\/\">nationwide Work+ program<\/a> to build durable skills into on-campus student employment and extend the benefits of work-based learning to contexts behind internships<\/li>\n<li>Two work groups from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/offices\/president\/emerging-leaders-program\/\">President\u2019s Emerging Leaders Program<\/a> designing projects to develop durable career readiness skills into internships, as well as curricula<\/li>\n<li>Helping faculty develop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/offices\/vp-academic-strategy\/uh-microcredentials\/\">new micro-credentials<\/a> to meet workforce needs<\/li>\n<li>Development of a framework and process to certify and recognize industry-recognized credentials and industry-valued credentials<\/li>\n<li><abbr>UH<\/abbr> participation in all Chamber of Commerce <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cochawaii.org\/sector-partnerships\">sector partnerships<\/a>, and partnerships with the State and others to develop new sector partnerships<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/offices\/vp-academic-strategy\/disciplinary-convenings\/\">Disciplinary convenings<\/a> that bring together academic programs with employers to identify challenges and opportunities for closer coordination so that <abbr>UH<\/abbr> graduates are prepared to meet current and future workforce needs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As <abbr>UH<\/abbr> continues to build partnerships with employers and K&#8211;12 educators, it envisions a future where every <span aria-label=\"kamaaina\">kama&#699;a&#299;na<\/span> has equitable
