February marks Career and Technical Education (CTE<\/abbr>) Month, a time to celebrate the programs that equip students with the skills and experiences needed to succeed in their careers. At the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>, CTE<\/abbr> programs play a crucial role in meeting the workforce demands of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n

A recent report from the Healthcare Association of Hawaii<\/a>, for example, identifies 1,228 openings in the nursing professions (RN, LPN, APRN), down 11% from 2022. UH<\/abbr> offers nursing preparation programs at Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>, Kapi\u02bbolani and Kaua\u02bbi Community Colleges, and UH<\/abbr> Maui College, UH<\/abbr> Hilo and UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/p>\n

Workforce development is one of the four imperatives of the UH<\/abbr> System\u2019s Â鶹´«Ã½ for 2023-2029<\/a><\/em>. Leading this charge is the systemwide Office of Workforce Development<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“This UH<\/abbr> imperative drives my work with colleagues across the 10 UH<\/abbr> campuses and in Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s public and private sectors,” said Christine Beaule, director of workforce development. “We also work closely with Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> P–20 Partnerships for Education<\/a>, a UH<\/abbr> office under the vice president of academic strategy that provides statewide leadership and coordination of CTE<\/abbr> programs in the state.”<\/p>\n

The Office of Workforce Development fosters deeper engagement between UH<\/abbr> and employers. This includes active partnerships with the Chamber of Commerce Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>, service on various boards and committees, and the development of sector partnerships, such as a new transportation sector initiative.<\/p>\n
