Smith, who is half Japanese and half Welsh, represented Japan in the cultural pageant. Her national costume included a kimono designed by Sueko Oshimoto, who worked on the Emmy-awarded project <em>Shogun<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It shows that no matter where you\u2019re from, even if you\u2019re from a small town and you don&#8217;t have as many pageant resources in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, as long as you work hard and you have a good team of people and you practice hard, you can achieve your dreams,&rdquo; Smith said.<\/p>\n<p>Smith entered <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa at age 16 after graduating early from <span aria-label=\"Hoala\">Ho&#699;\u0101la<\/span> School in Wahiaw\u0101.
