A ceremony guided by cultural practitioner <span aria-label=\"Umi\">&#699;Umi<\/span> Kai set the tone for the day, with attendees participating in protocol and a presentation of ho\u02bbokupu (offerings) such as lei, fresh fruits, and other biodegradable offerings.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_207880\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-207880\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/kapiolani-makahiki-3-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people at makahiki\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-207880\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/kapiolani-makahiki-3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/kapiolani-makahiki-3-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/kapiolani-makahiki-3.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-207880\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Campus staff, faculty, and leadership gather to celebrate Makahiki.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;We honor Lono, the embodiment of life-giving rain, as water is the foundation of all life within the biosphere, nurturing growth and vitality through the flourishing of plant life upon the honua (Earth). Our celebration pays tribute to the elements of the natural order, embracing their harmony through the ceremonies and activities of this sacred festival to come.&rdquo; said Kohlby Soong, M&#257;la M&#257;unuunu coordinator and festival chair. &ldquo;Makahiki connects us to the cycles of nature, to the wisdom of our k\u016bpuna (elders), and to one another, fostering unity, gratitude and a shared commitment to the balance and abundance of our <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;&#257;ina<\/span> (land). Lonoikamakahiki (Lono of Makahiki)!&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Skills, endurance, strength, strategy<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_207879\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-207879\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/kapiolani-makahiki-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people playing makahiki games\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-207879\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/kapiolani-makahiki-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/kapiolani-makahiki-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/kapiolani-makahiki-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-207879\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Competitors tested their skills, endurance, strength, and strategy of the mind in traditional <span aria-label=\"paani\">p&#257;&#699;ani<\/span>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Students, faculty and staff tested their skills, endurance, strength and strategy in traditional <span aria-label=\"paani\">p&#257;&#699;ani<\/span> (games or sports), and attendees enjoyed workshops such as lomilomi (Hawaiian massage), <span aria-label=\"kupee\">k&#363;pe&#699;e<\/span> (bracelet) making, and <span aria-label=\"apu\">&#699;apu<\/span> (coconut shell cup)  and <span aria-label=\"awa\">&#699;awa<\/span> (shrub used to make a ceremonial beverage) demonstrations.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve $1,500 scholarships for spring 2025, were awarded to the grand prize winners of each Makahiki game.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The opening ceremony was a truly surreal experience, as all the elements came together in perfect harmony, unveiling the profound essence of the Lono season and marking its sacred beginning,&rdquo; said student Nathalia Brown. &ldquo;The activities were both fun and engaging, offering a unique opportunity for students to connect in ways that go beyond the classroom.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_207881\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-207881\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/kapiolani-makahiki-4.jpg\" alt=\"people pounding halo\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-207881\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/kapiolani-makahiki-4.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/kapiolani-makahiki-4-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-207881\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students enjoyed workshops such as <span aria-label=\"kui\">ku&#699;i<\/span> kalo demonstrations.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The festival was led by the Title III project <span aria-label=\"Kuloaa\">K&#363;loa&#699;a<\/span>, Advancing Indigenous Innovators and the <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> <span aria-label=\"Aha\">&#699;Aha<\/span> Kal&#257;ualani, and emphasized inclusivity and cultural education while building a stronger sense of community.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our <span aria-label=\"ohana\">&#699;ohana<\/span> here at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> truly needed this moment to pause and reflect on our place and purpose within this space,&rdquo;
