Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>) have partnered to launch Ka <span aria-label=\"Umeke\">&#699;Umeke<\/span> Lama (Hawaiian for &ldquo;Bowl of Enlightenment&rdquo;), a groundbreaking initiative aimed at transforming cancer care in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and the Pacific. The effort focuses on reducing cancer disparities through cutting-edge research, workforce development, and culturally informed practices. <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_207851\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-207851\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/manoa-ueno-naoto-2024-headshot.jpg\" alt=\"Naoto T. Ueno<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;The mission of Ka <span aria-label=\"Umeke\">&#699;Umeke<\/span> Lama is to provide equitable access to high-quality cancer care throughout <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and the <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> Affiliated Pacific Islands by developing a strong and integrated oncology infrastructure,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Cancer Center Director Naoto T. Ueno. &ldquo;We will help cancer-related healthcare providers to work together to address complex issues in the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and the Pacific. Our vision is a future where cancer care is accessible, equitable, and rooted in both scientific innovation and cultural understanding. Everyone should have access to high-quality cancer care, regardless of their background or geography.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The effort is a collaboration with <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Cancer Consortium members, including The Queen\u2019s Health Systems and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Pacific Health.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/manoa-cancer-center-graphic-300x213.jpg\" alt=\"info graphic of cancer rates\" width=\"300\" height=\"213\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-207848\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/manoa-cancer-center-graphic-300x213.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/manoa-cancer-center-graphic-130x92.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/manoa-cancer-center-graphic.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Key elements of Ka <span aria-label=\"Umeke\">&#699;Umeke<\/span> Lama include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Oncologic Education and Workforce Development:<\/strong> Establishing a medical oncology fellowship program, integrating statewide oncology curricula, and providing cultural competence training for healthcare providers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Addressing Health Disparities:<\/strong> Expanding early cancer detection units, deploying oncology providers to underserved areas, enhancing telehealth systems, and launching targeted clinical trials for high-risk populations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Enhancing Clinical Research:<\/strong> Increasing clinical trial participation in diverse communities, developing a centralized clinical research database, and incorporating AI-based tools for cancer care.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and the <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> Affiliated Pacific Islands face significant challenges, including high cancer rates among Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders and Filipinos, coupled with a shortage of oncology professionals, particularly in rural and remote areas. Native Hawaiians have the highest cancer mortality rate in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, and certain Pacific Islander groups experience disproportionately high rates of liver cancer.
