  {"id":207692,"date":"2024-12-11T16:11:31","date_gmt":"2024-12-12T02:11:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=207692"},"modified":"2024-12-12T08:03:44","modified_gmt":"2024-12-12T18:03:44","slug":"paddles-by-pacific-gallery-iolani","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2024\/12\/11\/paddles-by-pacific-gallery-iolani\/","title":{"rendered":"Paddles by Pacific artisans featured at Gallery \u02bbIolani exhibit"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/windward-gallery-iolani-paddles.jpg\" alt=\"people working on canoe paddle\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-207699\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/windward-gallery-iolani-paddles.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/windward-gallery-iolani-paddles-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/windward-gallery-iolani-paddles-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A free exhibit of 14-foot hoe uli (steering paddles), <span aria-label=\"Hookahi\">Ho&#699;ok&#257;hi<\/span> Ka <span aria-label=\"Ilau\">&#699;Ilau<\/span> Like Ana Wield the Paddles Together, will be on view at Windward Community College\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/gallery.windward.hawaii.edu\/\">Gallery <span aria-label=\"Iolani\">&#699;Iolani<\/span><\/a>, January 18&#8211;March 7, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>It features paddles crafted by during the 13th Festival of Pacific Arts and Culture (FestPAC), which included delegations from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, Aotearoa, American Samoa, Western Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, French Polynesia, Guam, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Rapa Nui, Solomon Islands, Taiwan, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.<\/p>\n<p>In June during FestPAC, Hui K&#257;lai <span aria-label=\"Kii\">Ki&#699;i<\/span> O <span aria-label=\"KUpaaikee\">K&#363;p&#257;&#699;aike&#699;e<\/span>, a Hawaiian carving revitalization group, hosted 70 Moananui\u0101kea (Pacific) carvers, uniting to create hoe uli as symbols of collective self-determination.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As Pacific peoples, we\u2019re all voyagers, we\u2019re all canoe people, and so hoe uli became the carving theme for FestPAC as a common cultural piece. The hoe uli represents our collective self-determination as Pacific peoples navigating our collective futures,&rdquo; said Andre Perez, program lead for k&#257;lai (carving) for FestPAC and project director of Hui K&#257;lai <span aria-label=\"Kii\">Ki&#699;i<\/span> O <span aria-label=\"KUpaaikee\">K&#363;p&#257;&#699;aike&#699;e<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Perez, a Windward <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> and <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa alumnus, co-curated the exhibit with Kaili Chun, sculptor and installation artist.<\/p>\n<p>An artist reception will take place on Saturday, January 18, 2025, 3&#8211;6 p.m. Gallery <span aria-label=\"Iolani\">&#699;Iolani<\/span> is open Monday&#8211;Saturday, 1&#8211;5 p.m.; Closed Sundays and holidays.
