So he took it upon himself to develop relationships&#8212;pilina&#8212;with his new peers and professors.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Building pilina takes time and effort, but it is the most worthwhile endeavor,&rdquo; said Antonacci, 25, of <span aria-label=\"Lihue\">L&#299;hu&#699;e<\/span>, <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>, who will be one of the two student speakers at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu's\">O&#699;ahu\u2019s<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/commencement\">2024 Mid-Year Commencement<\/a> on December 14.<\/p>\n<p>Antonacci, who will receive a bachelor of arts in humanities with a concentration in history, has come a long way from those initial feelings of isolation in the first few months of fall 2022.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Read more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2024\/12\/09\/uh-west-oahu-student-speaker-jared-mccann\/\">Jared <span aria-label=\"Kaeo\">K&#257;&#699;eo<\/span> McCann<\/a>, who was also selected to be a student commencement speaker.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Inspiring &lsquo;each and every person&rsquo;<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_207436\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-207436\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/west-oahu-commencement-antonacci-2-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"headshot\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-207436\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/west-oahu-commencement-antonacci-2-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/west-oahu-commencement-antonacci-2-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/west-oahu-commencement-antonacci-2.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-207436\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Travis Antonacci<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He helped launch <a href=\"https:\/\/ojs.westoahu.hawaii.edu\/dpp\"><em>Da Pueo Press<\/em><\/a>, an undergraduate academic journal established by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> students for <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> students. Antonacci contributed to the formulation of some of the journal\u2019s policies and designed some of the content management and workflow systems.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;For me, as his mentor, I am incredibly honored to be a part of his journey,&rdquo; said Yasmine Romero, associate professor of English and faculty editor of Da Pueo Press. &ldquo;Travis inspires each and every person he encounters because he is compassionate, creative and socially responsible.
