Carissa Moore<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Kanaka ʻŌiwi<\/span> (Native Hawaiian) Carissa Moore, Olympic gold medalist and five-time world surfing champion, is bringing her passion for the ocean and public lands to the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa. On December 5, Moore will headline “The Power of Outdoor Places,”<\/a> a free public event hosted by the UH<\/abbr> Better Tomorrow Speaker Series<\/a> in partnership with the Trust for Public Land (TPL<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n

The event, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Kennedy Theatre, will feature an on-stage conversation between Moore, TPL<\/abbr>\u2019s Parks Initiative leader, Bianca Clarke, and moderator M\u0101healani Richardson, anchorwoman at Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> News Now. (Register online<\/a>)<\/p>\n

“Protecting and stewarding public lands is critical to our well-being as individuals and society,” said Lea Hong, TPL<\/abbr>\u2019s Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> state director. “We are so grateful that Carissa is joining us to share her story about the significance of these spaces.”<\/p>\n

Outdoor places<\/h2>\n

Moore grew up surfing at Oʻahu\u2019s<\/span> iconic beach parks and will highlight the essential role of public lands in personal growth and community well-being.<\/p>\n

“From landscape architecture to botany, UH<\/abbr> trains a wide range of students to take care of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s public places,” said UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Provost Michael Bruno. “The work of TPL<\/abbr> helps ensure that those lands are protected in perpetuity, and we\u2019re so pleased Carissa is going to spotlight their important work.”<\/p>\n

Moore is an advocate for women\u2019s surfing and mental health. In 2018, she founded Moore Aloha, a program that empowers young women through surfing, cultural activities and mentorship.<\/p>\n

The Better Tomorrow Speaker Series is a joint initiative of the Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Community Foundation, Kamehameha Schools, UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and UH<\/abbr> Foundation, with support from local organizations.<\/p>\n
