According to <a href=\"https:\/\/uhero.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Economic Research Organization<\/a> (<abbr>UHERO<\/abbr>) Professor Ruben Juarez, who is one of the study\u2019s leads, approximately 15&#8211;20&#37; of those affected by the 2023 Maui wildfires are no longer living on Maui. This event was held to accommodate those who have relocated to <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our goal is to ensure we leave no one behind,&rdquo; Juarez said. &ldquo;We know some participants have relocated, and we wanted to provide an opportunity for them to participate in our critical research.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/manoa-maui-wes-oahu-event-wide-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people sitting and standing in a large room\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-206966\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/manoa-maui-wes-oahu-event-wide-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/manoa-maui-wes-oahu-event-wide-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/manoa-maui-wes-oahu-event-wide.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The study, which recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2024\/09\/03\/state-additional-funding-maui-wes\/\">received an additional $2.3 million in state funding<\/a>, has opened enrollment to children aged 10 and older. Researchers are particularly focused on understanding the potential long-term health consequences for younger survivors. Juarez emphasized the significant approach of connecting participants directly with mental and physical health services.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our study is not just about gathering data&#8212;it\u2019s about creating a direct pathway to healing,&rdquo; Juarez said. &ldquo;We\u2019re not only identifying health challenges but immediately connecting survivors to the services they need.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/manoa-maui-wes-oahu-event-staff-meeting-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"group of people standing in a room\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-206968\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/manoa-maui-wes-oahu-event-staff-meeting-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/manoa-maui-wes-oahu-event-staff-meeting-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/manoa-maui-wes-oahu-event-staff-meeting.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The research team is planning additional events in Wailuku and Lahaina in December. By mid-December, they expect to reach their original goal of 2,000 participants. Starting in January 2025, the study will begin individual follow-up sessions for its early participants, tracking health impacts one year after their initial tests.<\/p>\n<p>This public impact research project is the result of an ongoing partnership among <abbr>UHERO<\/abbr>, which is housed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\">John A.
