It\u2019s important work as nearly a third of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> residents are food insecure\u2014meaning they can\u2019t access the food they need to thrive\u2014according to the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Foodbank.<\/p>\n[vc_video link=&#8221;https:\/\/youtube.com\/shorts\/YvwfRkHA4d4&#8243; el_aspect=&#8221;916&#8243; align=&#8221;right&#8221; el_id=&#8221;wrap-video-right&#8221;]\n<p>Haley Nakamura, a graduate student in nutritional sciences in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience<\/a>, currently leads the volunteer efforts to gather and weigh excess food from the Gateway Cafe and Campus Center Food Court and deliver it to the Institute for Human Services (IHS) every other week.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think it&#8217;s really important not just for the recovery of food and prevention of food waste, but also giving back to the community that I grew up in, I think is something that&#8217;s really cool as well,&rdquo; Nakamura said.<\/p>\n<p>On a recent Friday, Nakamura and fellow student volunteer Stacey Keruwa, who is also a fellow at the East-West Center, weighed and delivered 195 lbs of recovered food, including beef brisket, clam chowder and fresh green salad.<\/p>\n<p>The salad was served to <abbr>IHS<\/abbr> guests that night and other items were chilled, reheated and served the next day.<\/p>\n<h2>Call for volunteers<\/h2>\n<p>Marcie Moribe, marketing specialist with Sodexo <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, which runs food operations of the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Dining Services, a partnership with Student Housing Services and Student Life &#038; Development, said there will always be excess food even though they try their best to manage how much is produced.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We&#8217;re really glad that the Food Recovery Network volunteers come to pick up and help fight food insecurity in our community,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_206914\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-206914\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/manoa-food-recovery-3-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"2 people weighing try of food\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-206914\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/manoa-food-recovery-3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/manoa-food-recovery-3-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/manoa-food-recovery-3.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-206914\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stacy Keruwa and Haley Nakamura weigh food to be donated.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If more students volunteered, Moribe added, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa could donate more and have an even bigger impact. More help in collecting, weighing and driving the food to IHS is needed.
