Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>) has received $500,000  from the National Institutes of Health to support ethical <abbr>AI<\/abbr> development in public health and to reduce healthcare disparities, especially in underserved communities.<\/p>\n<p>Led by Alex Stokes, the <abbr>ARCH<\/abbr> Collaborative (<abbr>AI<\/abbr> Resource Concierge for Healthcare) at <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> builds on Phase <abbr title=\"roman numeral one\">I<\/abbr>\u2019s success, which piloted <abbr>AI<\/abbr> tools for healthcare equity in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and the Pacific Islands. With Phase <abbr title=\"roman numeral two\">II<\/abbr> funding from <abbr>NIH<\/abbr>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aim-ahead.net\/\">AIM <abbr>AHEAD<\/abbr> program<\/a> (Artificial Intelligence\/Machine Learning Consortium to Advance Health Equity and Researcher Diversity), the program will expand its online platform that provides specialized <abbr>AI<\/abbr> resources to help healthcare providers, researchers and community organizations overcome barriers to adopting <abbr>AI<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blocklink\">Related <em><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> News<\/em> story: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/11\/09\/grant-ai-advance-health-equity\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> to use <abbr>AI<\/abbr> to advance health equity with $500K grant, November 9, 2023<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The <abbr>ARCH<\/abbr> Collaborative is dedicated to helping communities harness the power of <abbr>AI<\/abbr> to improve health,&rdquo; Stokes said. &ldquo;With Phase <abbr>II<\/abbr> funding, we can extend our tailored support to national stakeholders, deepening our commitment to advancing healthcare ethically and equitably through <abbr>AI<\/abbr>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The funding reinforces <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>\u2019s commitment to health equity and positions the <abbr>ARCH<\/abbr> Collaborative as a critical player in <abbr>AIM<\/abbr> <abbr>AHEAD<\/abbr>\u2019s national efforts to make <abbr>AI<\/abbr> accessible for equitable healthcare across the <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Receiving Phase <abbr>II<\/abbr> funding underscores our institution\u2019s dedication to innovation and equity in healthcare,&rdquo; said <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> Dean Sam Shomaker. &ldquo;The <abbr>ARCH<\/abbr> Collaborative\u2019s pioneering efforts will provide vital resources for all <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> communities, ensuring that <abbr>AI<\/abbr> advancements are accessible and transformative.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> President David Lassner highlighted the broader impact of the funding. &ldquo;Being awarded this competitive NIH funding for <abbr>AIM<\/abbr> <abbr>AHEAD<\/abbr> signifies another important step forward for our university, fusing state-of-the-art technology with our unique healthcare imperatives,&rdquo; Lassner said. &ldquo;We remain committed to enhancing health outcomes for our highly diverse population, with a special focus on underserved areas.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In collaboration with Chaminade University and other community organizations, the <abbr>ARCH<\/abbr> Collaborative will expand its <abbr>AI<\/abbr>\/<abbr title=\"machine learning\">ML<\/abbr> concierge model to support <abbr>AIM<\/abbr> <abbr>AHEAD<\/abbr> stakeholders with new research tools and resources.
