Backpacks: supplies and essentials to help them on their journey. Beliefs: building mindsets and persistence to be successful in their chosen pathway.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>GEAR UP <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> provides support to students for seven years from middle school through their first year of college. By offering a range of free resources, the program\u2019s goal is to equip students with foundational skills and support to succeed academically.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Resources include:<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/system-gear-up-oahu-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Smiling students\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-206336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/system-gear-up-oahu-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/system-gear-up-oahu-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/system-gear-up-oahu-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>peer mentorship<\/li>\n<li>Early College credits<\/li>\n<li>career exploration<\/li>\n<li>college application assistance <\/li>\n<li>summer sessions <\/li>\n<li>college campus visits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>GEAR UP alumni, cycle of support<\/h2>\n<p>GEAR UP graduates who are now in college return to mentor younger students. Many of the current mentors attended Waipahu, Leilehua, and Hilo High Schools, and bring with them first-hand experience that helps them relate to the program\u2019s new generation of students.<\/p>\n<p>The newly awarded grant is just one of 24, out of 118 national GEAR UP applicants.
