  {"id":205993,"date":"2024-11-01T15:49:42","date_gmt":"2024-11-02T01:49:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=205993"},"modified":"2024-11-04T08:18:32","modified_gmt":"2024-11-04T18:18:32","slug":"hawaii-indonesia-oral-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2024\/11\/01\/hawaii-indonesia-oral-history\/","title":{"rendered":"Students from Hawai\u02bbi, Indonesia blend oral history, landscape conservation"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/manoa-ctahr-fishpond-1.jpg\" alt=\"people sitting by fishpond\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-205991\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/manoa-ctahr-fishpond-1.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/manoa-ctahr-fishpond-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/manoa-ctahr-fishpond-1-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Blending local knowledge with ecological conservation efforts by engaging young adults aged 18&#8211;25 in oral history documentation is the focus of a University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa project that was awarded &#36;114,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service, International Program Office and U.S. Agency for International Development.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/manoa-ctahr-Indonesia-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"indonesia\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-205992\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/manoa-ctahr-Indonesia-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/manoa-ctahr-Indonesia-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/manoa-ctahr-Indonesia.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The project &ldquo;Enlivening Forest Landscapes in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and Indonesia,&rdquo; will be led by Thao Le, principal investigator, professor and chair in the <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience<\/a> Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, alongside Micah Fisher, co-principal investigator and assistant professor at the <a href=\"https:\/\/sci.manoa.hawaii.edu\/programs\/matsunaga-institute-for-peace\/\">Matsunaga Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution<\/a>, which is housed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/sci.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a>.The Project also partners with Ming Li Yong at the East-West Center Research Program.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We hope that this grant helps a group of students from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and Indonesia learn and experience humility by honoring and respecting the wisdom of our elders, kupuna, who really knew what it means and what it takes to care for the land, and by land, we mean all the elements that sustain a community,&rdquo; said Le.<\/p>\n<h2>Learning from elders, community leaders<\/h2>\n<p>Students will interview elders and community leaders in both <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and Indonesia, deepening their understanding of the cultural significance of landscapes. Having this sort of grounded context also helps to deepen learning opportunities in the classroom after students return.&ldquo;<\/p>\n<p>The project will take <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> students to the Bantimurung-Bulusaraung National Park in Sulawesi. Participants will gain insights into climate change, environmental governance, and social justice histories.
