A softball scholarship sealed the deal, allowing her to pursue both passions. Steadmon said Tracy Wiegner, a marine science professor at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo guided her through a senior research project on water quality in East <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Steadmon graduated from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo with a <abbr>BS<\/abbr> in marine science with high honors.<\/p>\n<h2>Foundational research<\/h2>\n<p>Steadmon\u2019s years of research at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo, addressing the rising concern of microbial pollution in Hilo Bay, culminated in a published study on Staphylococcus aureus and fecal bacteria in Hawaiian waters, co-authored with Professor Wiegner. Reflecting on her journey, she credits <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo as pivotal in her career: &ldquo;<abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo was definitely the foundation for me, to build as a scientist and as a person.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related <em><abbr>UH<\/abbr> News<\/em> story:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2024\/08\/12\/rising-risk-of-infection-hilo-bay-climate-change\/\">Rising public risk of infection at Hilo Bay linked to climate change<\/a>, August 12, 2024<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Serendipitous encounter<\/h2>\n<p>While living in Hilo, she was doing volunteer work at K\u012bholo fishpond in Kona and met a faculty member from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa who had just received a grant to do waterborne pathogen research.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I was asked to join Dr. Kiana Frank\u2019s lab as a <abbr>PhD<\/abbr> student.
