Through direct financial support, including scholarships and travel opportunities, the program seeks to empower these students to become future leaders in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8216;s food systems. By providing opportunities for <span aria-label=\"huakai\">huaka&#699;i<\/span> (educational journeys) and experiential <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;&#257;ina<\/span>-based learning, the initiative aims to provide education grounded in cultural relevance and place-based knowledge. <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nifa.usda.gov\/grants\/funding-opportunities\/alaska-native-serving-native-hawaiian-serving-institutions-education\">Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian (<abbr>ANNH<\/abbr>) grant<\/a> from the <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> Department of Agriculture was awarded to <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leeward.hawaii.edu\/\">Leeward Community College<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources<\/a> (<abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr>) at <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½ Community College<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Fostering collaboration, partnerships<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_205543\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-205543\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/system-indigenous-students-food-systems-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people in a hale\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-205543\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/system-indigenous-students-food-systems-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/system-indigenous-students-food-systems-1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/system-indigenous-students-food-systems-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-205543\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Sustainable Community Food Systems<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The multi-institutional effort will focus on providing direct financial support to allow underrepresented students to focus on their education without financial strain; conducting experiential learning through <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;&#257;ina<\/span>-based learning activities and cross-campus <span aria-label=\"huakai\">huaka&#699;i<\/span> (travel); integrating Indigenous and traditional ecological knowledge into food systems education; demystifying the path to graduate school through mentoring and targeted support; and fostering cross-campus collaboration and course articulations.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"HIA\">HI&#699;A<\/span> will also foster partnerships with community-based organizations actively involved in food-system education, including: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maoorganicfarms.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"MAO\">MA&#699;O<\/span> Organic Farms<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hookuaaina.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hookuaaina\">Ho&#699;okua&#699;&#257;ina<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/kokuahawaiifoundation.org\/kokua-learning-farm\/\">K\u014dkua Learning Farm<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiibananasource.com\/\">Hawaii Banana Source<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kualoa.com\/kualoa-grown\">Kualoa Grown<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/kakoooiwi.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kakoo\">Kako&#699;o<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Oiwi\">&#699;&#332;iwi<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/waipafoundation.org\/\">Waip\u0101<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/eatbreadfruit.com\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Ulu\">&#699;Ulu<\/span> Coop<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We&#8217;re creating a community supported view, vision and future for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8216;s food systems,&rdquo;
