Scott Janusch holds an oboe made of Hawaiian kauila wood.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In a post-concert talk story, Janusch and event organizers will share the story of how the wood for the oboe came from a kauila (alphitonia ponderosa) tree native to <span aria-label=\"Kokee\">K&#333;ke&#699;e<\/span>, <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>, that was damaged by Hurricane Iniki in 1992 and reclaimed by the late Ed <span aria-label=\"Kaiwi\">Ka&#699;iwi<\/span> of Anahola. Through generous gifts, the wood eventually made its way to world renowned oboe maker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/howarthoflondon\/posts\/howarth-are-proud-to-present-this-special-howarth-oboe-newly-minted-it-has-been-\/1975506095836080\/?_rdr\">Howarth of London<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Janusch said the free community concert is to share orchestra music with the community, but also to raise awareness about the uniqueness and the beauty of the environment from which the wood comes.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Kauila is an ancient resource that was very important to Hawaiian culture,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;This wood was a very important resource in the ancient Hawaiian culture and the few remaining trees still standing today in the old growth forests need to be protected; they stand as a majestic part of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> history.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_94830\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-94830\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/uhwo-music-magnussen-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"male\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-94830\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/uhwo-music-magnussen-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/uhwo-music-magnussen-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/uhwo-music-magnussen.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-94830\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jon Magnussen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The concert is presented by <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> in collaboration with Live Music Awareness, the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Music Fund, Chamber Music <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, and the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/music\/\">Music Department<\/a> instrument collection.<\/p>\n<p>Magnussen, a professor at <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a>, said the oboe concerto was inspired by the many ways the people of old <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <span aria-label=\"poe\">(po&#699;e<\/span> kahiko) made use of the once common, but now rare and precious Kauila wood.
