This is <span aria-label=\"Ulutopia\">&#699;Ulutopia<\/span>\u2014a project launched in 2014 by <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> and the National Tropical Botanical Garden\u2019s Breadfruit Institute to improve <span aria-label=\"ulu\">&#699;ulu<\/span> production.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_204358\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-204358\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/kauai-ulutopia-yamamoto-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"man smiling\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-204358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/kauai-ulutopia-yamamoto-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/kauai-ulutopia-yamamoto-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/kauai-ulutopia-yamamoto.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-204358\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brian Yamamoto<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;We found that breadfruit grows slowly but really well with fertilization,&rdquo; said Brian Yamamoto, a professor of science at <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> and <span aria-label=\"Ulutopia\">&#699;Ulutopia<\/span> project director. &ldquo;A lot of places that grow breadfruit, just let nature grow the tree, and it basically doesn\u2019t get cared for, but here\u2014once you start fertilizing\u2014you can almost double your production.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, Yamamoto estimates hundreds of students have gained hands-on experience in cultivating <span aria-label=\"ulu\">&#699;ulu<\/span>, scientific data collection and research. University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa botany student Natalie Blum, who graduated from <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> in 2019, compiled data for the project when she was a student there.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_204354\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-204354\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/kauai-ulutopia-blum-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"woman smiling\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-204354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/kauai-ulutopia-blum-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/kauai-ulutopia-blum-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/kauai-ulutopia-blum.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-204354\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Natalie Blum<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;I think <span aria-label=\"Ulutopia\">&#699;Ulutopia<\/span> is a really great place,&rdquo; Blum said. &ldquo;It\u2019s great for students to help Brian tend to the farm, and in general, <span aria-label=\"ulu\">&#699;ulu<\/span> is a really good crop to grow, makes a lot of fruit, very nutritious also. \u2026I feel everyone should have a tree in their yard.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Developing the market<\/h2>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Ulutopia\">&#699;Ulutopia<\/span> has a multi-pronged strategy to increase both production and utilization of the crop. Focusing on farm-to-table, <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>\u2019s culinary program and local chefs are helping to develop and share recipes to encourage <span aria-label=\"ulu\">&#699;ulu<\/span> consumption.
