Mazie K. Hirono works on behalf of the citizens of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>, Elise Inouye is by her side to communicate positions and policies. She is Hirono\u2019s press secretary\u2014crafting press releases, floor speeches and more on a daily basis.<\/p>\n<p>From a young age, Inouye knew she wanted to be in public service. Her time at the <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo<\/a>, specifically her first women\u2019s studies course, solidified her decision.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I didn&#8217;t know that that was an area of study that was even an option afforded to me,&rdquo; said Inouye. &ldquo;It may sound a little dramatic, but I do think that taking that one course has really changed my life.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_204110\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-204110\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/system-uh-alumni-inouye-e-2-2.jpg\" alt=\"woman smiling\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-204110\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/system-uh-alumni-inouye-e-2-2.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/system-uh-alumni-inouye-e-2-2-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-204110\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elise Inouye<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Inouye graduated from <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo in 2017 with a double major in communication and gender and women\u2019s studies. She said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo prepared her for her current role.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think that both of those programs and degrees that I received from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo have led me to where I am today, but also I use the skills that I gained and the knowledge and insight from those courses on a regular basis,&rdquo; said Inouye.<\/p>\n<p>She pushes preparation, especially for those with double majors.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think the biggest piece of advice would be to plan ahead,&rdquo; said Inouye. &ldquo;My career counselor, the guidance counselor that I had at Hilo was my best friend.
