This fall, the H&#333;naunau native will lead the cast of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2024\/08\/30\/hawaiian-theatre-premiere-of-puana\/\"><em>Puana<\/em><\/a>, the latest hana keaka (theatre production) emerging out of the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hanakeaka\/\">Hawaiian theatre program<\/a> at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa. (Credit: Amy Boyle Photography)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;I feel very <span aria-label=\"haaheo\">ha&#699;aheo<\/span>, I feel very proud to be part of this \u02bbohana, part of this movement of telling stories through our language and through our <span aria-label=\"ike\">&#699;ike<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> (Hawaiian knowledge),&rdquo; said Tavares who also earned a <abbr title=\"bachelor of arts\">BA<\/abbr> in <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/depts\/performingarts\/\">performing arts<\/a> at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo in 2012. &ldquo;I think it\u2019s monumental in ways that will continue to expand throughout different generations. Growing up within the Hawaiian language immersion program on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island, he and his siblings speak their native tongue fluently. His return to the islands has allowed him to further immerse himself in his heritage, both as an actor and now as an assistant professor of acting in the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/liveonstage\/\">theatre and dance department<\/a>, where he teaches acting for tv, film as well as audition techniques and musical theatre preparation.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It is surreal to be a faculty member, to be honest,&rdquo; Tavares said. &ldquo;I love acting, I love teaching, I love telling stories\u2014so this position feels like divine timing. Very grateful for the opportunity to do what I love. My hope is to be able to allow local and Kanaka Maoli actors and storytellers to be able to receive world class training here at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2><span aria-label=\"MookUauhau\">Mo&#699;ok&#363;&#699;auhau<\/span> and mele<\/h2>\n<p>Among the handful of cast members starring alongside Tavares in <em>Puana<\/em> are <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Hawaiian Theatre MFA student actors Ikaika Mendez and <span aria-label=\"Kaneikoliakawahineikaiukapuomua\">K&#257;neikoliakawahineika&#699;iukapuomua<\/span> Baker, and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa alumnus <span aria-label=\"Kaula\">Ka&#699;ula<\/span> Krug, all contributing to a production that marries storytelling with the traditional Hawaiian art of <span aria-label=\"mookUauhau\">mo&#699;ok&#363;&#699;auhau<\/span> (family lineage).<\/p>\n<p>The production is a collaboration between Hawaiian Theatre and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kawaihonaakealoha.org\/\">Ka Waihona A Ke Aloha<\/a>, a project of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kawaihuelani.org\/\">Kawaihuelani Center for Hawaiian Language<\/a>, and brings together an impressive creative team, such as Kumu Tammy <span aria-label=\"Hailiopua\">Haili&#699;&#333;pua<\/span> Baker, founder of the Hawaiian Theatre program who wrote and directed the play, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Hawaiian language professor and composer Kumu Hula R. Keawe Lopes, Jr., Kumu Hula Tracie <span aria-label=\"Kaonohilani\">Ka&#699;&#333;nohilani<\/span> Lopes, N&#257; H&#333;k&#363; Hanohano award-winning musician Zachary <span aria-label=\"Alakai\">Alaka&#699;i<\/span> Lum, <span aria-label=\"Moolono\">Mo&#699;olono<\/span> and playwright Kaipulaumakaniolono Baker, and M\u0101ori composer and recording artist Tawaroa Kawana.<\/p>\n<h2>Ticket Information<\/h2>\n<p><em>Puana<\/em> will debut at Kennedy Theatre with performances September 27&#8211;28 and October 4&#8211;6. Tickets range from $5 to $25 and will be available at the Kennedy Theatre Box Office starting September 23, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, and one hour before each performance.
