  {"id":203742,"date":"2024-09-17T15:10:52","date_gmt":"2024-09-18T01:10:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=203742"},"modified":"2024-09-17T15:19:17","modified_gmt":"2024-09-18T01:19:17","slug":"schager-afca-good-works-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2024\/09\/17\/schager-afca-good-works-team\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr>QB<\/abbr> Schager named to prestigious <abbr>AFCA<\/abbr> Good Works Team, Wuerffel Trophy semifinalist"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/manoa-athletics-schager-afca-wuerffel.jpg\" alt=\"Brayden Schager throwing a football\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-203731\" \/><\/p>\n<p>University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa quarterback Brayden Schager was among a select group of 11 Football Bowl Subdivision student-athletes named to the Allstate <abbr>AFCA<\/abbr> Good Works Team, which qualifies him as a semifinalist for the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy.<\/p>\n<p>The Allstate <abbr>AFCA<\/abbr> Good Works Team recognized 22 student-athletes&#8212;11 FBS and 11 lower division&#8212;and one head coach for exemplary community service. This year&#8217;s Allstate <abbr>AFCA<\/abbr> Good Works Team was selected from a record 178 nominees, representing players and coaches from colleges and universities across the country for their unwavering commitment to community service and their &ldquo;good works&rdquo; off the field.<\/p>\n<p>As a middle schooler, Schager and his younger sister founded the <abbr>HP<\/abbr> Buddy Bowl in 2017. The football game for athletes with physical and mental disabilities has become an annual tradition in Schager&#8217;s hometown of Highland Park, Texas.<\/p>\n<p>Schager has also embraced community involvement and volunteerism in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> for children with special needs and those less fortunate. Through <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr>, he has participated in the Unity Prom&#8212;a prom for special needs students&#8212;and visited local elementary schools where he&#8217;s been a speaker and a reader.<\/p>\n<p>At his church, Schager and several fellow teammates are part of a Super Bowl special, recording a show to discuss challenges and their faith. He also participates in the Night to Shine&#8212;an event for people with special needs hosted by local churches&#8212;every year in Honolulu.<\/p>\n<p>This summer Schager flew to <span aria-label=\"Lanai\">L&#257;na&#699;i<\/span> with other <abbr>UH<\/abbr> teammates to coach youth football. He also played a role in the development of the BraddahBall which is produced by Dallas-based company Big Game <abbr>USA<\/abbr> who will donate 100&#37; of proceeds of sales to Maui recovery relief and non-profit Treecovery.<\/p>\n<p>The 2024 Allstate Wuerffel Trophy finalists and recipient will be selected by a national voting committee, including a fan voting.
