She was one of only two students nationwide to receive the award and chosen for the excellence of her work in the Mathematical, Computing and Statistical Sciences Division.<\/p>\n<p>Pomare\u2019s project, <em>K&#257;kau and Mathematics: A Multicultural Perspective on Traditional Hawaiian Tattoos<\/em>, examines the mathematical principles embedded in k&#257;kau, the traditional Hawaiian tattoos. These k&#257;kau, significant in Native Hawaiian culture, symbolize genealogy and balance, using geometric shapes such as equilateral triangles.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_203699\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-203699\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/kapiolani-pomare-mathematics-award-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-203699\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/kapiolani-pomare-mathematics-award-3.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/kapiolani-pomare-mathematics-award-3-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-203699\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Moani Pomare, center, and her sister and aunt showing their ala niho.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;My research journey has been a deeply personal exploration of my heritage and how traditional Hawaiian practices, like k\u0101kau, are inherently connected to mathematical concepts,&rdquo; said Pomare. &ldquo;By uncovering these connections, I hope to demonstrate the ways in which culture and education can intersect, offering new perspectives.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Hawaiian storytelling frameworks<\/h2>\n<p>As a returning adult student, Pomare is starting the radiologic technology program. Her mentors, Assistant Professor John Rader and Li-Anne Delavega, undergraduate research experiences coordinator, helped guide her project, which uniquely used Hawaiian storytelling frameworks to present her findings.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are proud of Moani\u2019s success, which underscores the importance of integrating Indigenous perspectives into education,&rdquo; said Delavega. &ldquo;Her research showcases the unique contributions of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> students and the potential for cultural practices to inspire and enhance mathematical understanding on a national level.
