This is the third year <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa has offered a two-week immersive program in partnership with the urban and regional planning department at Diponegoro University (UNDIP) in Semarang.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The courses offered faculty and students from both universities an opportunity to share their knowledge and creativity in responding to urban environmental problems,&rdquo; said Priyam Das, an associate professor in DURP who co-designed the co-led joint course in Indonesia. &ldquo;<abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa students learned about resilience and informality&#8212;of settlements, services and solutions&#8212;by engaging with local communities in Semarang.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Neighborhood visits<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_203009\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-203009\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/manoa-durp-indonesia-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"People seated on the floor of a room\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-203009\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/manoa-durp-indonesia-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/manoa-durp-indonesia-1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/manoa-durp-indonesia-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-203009\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students gather in the attic of Sayung Village\u2019s last standing home; most of the houses in the area have been submerged by sea level rise<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>During the course, students attended lectures, conducted field research, and visited local neighborhoods facing unique and significant challenges. Studio-style group work enabled students to collaboratively analyze problems and propose potential solutions. They shared their findings and ideas at public presentations that concluded the program.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Immersive and collaborative international learning experiences are essential to equip future professionals with the skills and sensitivity needed to tackle the urban challenges of a globalized world,&rdquo; said Ashok Das, an associate professor in DURP, who conceived the collaborative program and led its design.<\/p>\n<h2>Critical learning<\/h2>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa graduate student Lahela Mattos took her first trip outside the U.S. to Indonesia. The k\u0101naka &#699;\u014diwi (Native Hawaiian) scholar is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/durp.manoa.hawaii.edu\/master-of-urban-and-regional-planning\/\">Master of Urban and Regional Planning<\/a> program at DURP.
