  {"id":202648,"date":"2024-08-27T15:33:05","date_gmt":"2024-08-28T01:33:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=202648"},"modified":"2024-08-27T18:05:10","modified_gmt":"2024-08-28T04:05:10","slug":"uhwo-to-use-creative-media-to-teach-stem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2024\/08\/27\/uhwo-to-use-creative-media-to-teach-stem\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr>UH<\/abbr> West O\u02bbahu plans to use creative media to teach <abbr>STEM<\/abbr>"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/uhwo-cm-stem.jpg\" alt=\"two students working with laptops.\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-202669\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/uhwo-cm-stem.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/uhwo-cm-stem-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/uhwo-cm-stem-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/acmsystem.hawaii.edu\/campus\/uh-west-oahu\/\">Academy for Creative Media<\/a> at the University of Hawaii&#8211;West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> (<abbr title=\"Academy for Creative media \">ACMWO<\/abbr>) has created a plan to use creative media as a gateway to engage underrepresented students in <abbr title=\"science, technology, engineering and mathematics\">STEM<\/abbr> concepts\u2014a significant step toward supporting the National Science Foundation\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/bpcnet.org\/departmental-bpc-plans\/\">Broadening Participation in Computing (<abbr title=\"Broadening Participation in Computing\">BPC<\/abbr>)<\/a> initiative.<\/p>\n<p>The plan was developed by Sharla Hanaoka, <abbr>ACMWO<\/abbr> director, and Brad Ashburn, associate professor of chemistry with the mathematics, natural and health sciences division at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/uhwo-cm-stem-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-202670\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/uhwo-cm-stem-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/uhwo-cm-stem-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/uhwo-cm-stem-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Next steps<\/h2>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> will offer a new Math 100 course, Generative Art and Science, dedicated to the merge of art and math that supports the <abbr>BPC<\/abbr> plan welcoming all students with basic programming proficiency in spring 2025.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;By merging art into <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> fields, we\u2019re not only breaking down barriers that often prevent students from our communities from pursuing computer science, but we\u2019re also fostering creativity and unconventional thinking, preparing a new generation of problem-solvers equipped with both technical know-how and artistic vision for a future where technology and creativity are increasingly intertwined,&rdquo; Hanaoka said. &ldquo;This could lead to a more diverse, inclusive and innovative creative technology industry overall.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Making art with science<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/uhwo-cm-stem-blue-kodaira-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-202671\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/uhwo-cm-stem-blue-kodaira-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/uhwo-cm-stem-blue-kodaira-98x130.jpg 98w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/uhwo-cm-stem-blue-kodaira.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Students Dylan Blue and Aina Kodaira&#8212;both pursuing a degree in creative media with a concentration in video game design and development&#8212;worked with Ashburn as a mentor on a summer research project that Ashburn will talk about in his upcoming course.<\/p>\n<p>Blue and Kodaira presented their project, &ldquo;Exploring Emergence with Cellular Automata,&rdquo; at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Student Research Experience Summer Symposium on August 9 at the Campus Center multi-purpose room. The project challenged them to combine software engineering, science, and design to build a highly interactive web application that generates complex patterns.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We created an algorithm that creates different patterns; that\u2019s how we blended technology with art,&rdquo; Blue said. &ldquo;This is significant because we don\u2019t really see that happening too much, right?
