  {"id":202041,"date":"2024-08-19T12:13:19","date_gmt":"2024-08-19T22:13:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=202041"},"modified":"2024-08-19T12:13:19","modified_gmt":"2024-08-19T22:13:19","slug":"round-two-funding-support-native-hawaiian-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2024\/08\/19\/round-two-funding-support-native-hawaiian-students\/","title":{"rendered":"$3.9<abbr>M<\/abbr> grant to support Native Hawaiian student health, wellbeing, more"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manoa-education-nh-grant-students.jpg\" alt=\"dozens of students clapping above their heads\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-202046\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manoa-education-nh-grant-students.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manoa-education-nh-grant-students-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manoa-education-nh-grant-students-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A $3.9 million grant aimed to improve the academic success alongside the physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of Native Hawaiian (<abbr>NH<\/abbr>) keiki has been awarded to a pair of University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Education<\/a> (<abbr>COE<\/abbr>) professors.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Erin Centeio in the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/krs\/\">Department of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science<\/a> and Professor <span aria-label=\"Kuulei\">Ku&#699;ulei<\/span> Serna in the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/catalog\/schools-colleges\/education\/ste\/\">School of Teacher Education<\/a> received a $3,954,518 grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Elementary and Secondary Education (Native Hawaiian Education Program).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manoa-education-nh-grant-students-health-wellbeing-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"kids making heart gestures\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-202047\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manoa-education-nh-grant-students-health-wellbeing-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manoa-education-nh-grant-students-health-wellbeing-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manoa-education-nh-grant-students-health-wellbeing.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is the second round of funding for I <span aria-label=\"Paa\">Pa&#699;a<\/span> Ka Huewai Pawehe&#8212;&ldquo;So that our prized water gourds are made firm.&rdquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2021\/07\/05\/improve-health-wellbeing-native-hawaiian-youth\/\">The first round of funding totaling $2.85 million was awarded in 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For the second round of funding, Centeio and Serna will be collaborating with Associate Professor Summer Maunakea in the Department of Curriculum Studies to include <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;\u0101ina<\/span>-based education. The three-year project is a partnership among the <abbr>COE<\/abbr>, the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Department of Education (<abbr>HIDOE<\/abbr>) and the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Department of Health.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The <abbr>HIDOE<\/abbr> serves a large proportion of <abbr>NH<\/abbr> youth who are at risk for long-term health issues, given the high obesity rates and lack of participation in physical activity,&rdquo; Centeio said. &ldquo;Many <abbr>NH<\/abbr> youth have experienced various forms of cultural trauma and find it hard to be successful in traditional academic venues.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Goals of the project include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Improve the overall health and wellbeing of <abbr>NH<\/abbr> students<\/li>\n<li>Improve the quality of health and physical education according to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> state standards and benchmarks as well as national recommendations<\/li>\n<li>Identify meaningful intersections within overall health and education, addressing whole child development<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Building upon the first round of I <span aria-label=\"Paa\">Pa&#699;a<\/span> Ka Huewai Pawehe, which currently partners with 20 schools across four complex areas on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> and <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>, round two will add 15 more schools across three new complex areas on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, Maui and Molokai.
