About 50 attendees engaged in various sessions at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>\u2019s Academy for Creative Media building, including in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lavaflow.info\/createx\">Create(x) <\/a>living laboratory.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_201821\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-201821\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/west-oahu-indigenous-culture-workshop-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-201821\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/west-oahu-indigenous-culture-workshop-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/west-oahu-indigenous-culture-workshop-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/west-oahu-indigenous-culture-workshop-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-201821\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Create(x) laboratory at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;In all my 30-plus years of <abbr>NSF<\/abbr> [National Science Foundation]-funded research, this is the first time I&#8217;ve seen them pay attention to culture, and it&#8217;s really great to see,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Professor Jason Leigh, principal investigator for the workshop. &ldquo;If you check out streaming media like Netflix, you&#8217;d be amazed, like I am, by how many untold stories and how much talent there is in the world. <abbr>NSF<\/abbr> believes that supporting culture as a key part of the science and technology ecosystem will spark new innovative ideas and create new economic opportunities for the future, and I couldn&#8217;t agree more.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Expected outcomes from the workshop include an outline for equitable and inclusive translational computational media research pathways, conceptual models of innovation spaces that integrate Indigenous knowledge and creative computational media, and a report advising the <abbr>NSF<\/abbr> on research and development investments to empower Indigenous communities nationwide.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_201822\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-201822\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/west-oahu-indigenous-culture-workshop-3-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people speaking to audience\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-201822\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/west-oahu-indigenous-culture-workshop-3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/west-oahu-indigenous-culture-workshop-3-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/west-oahu-indigenous-culture-workshop-3.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-201822\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kamuela Enos (left)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Co-principal investigators included Kamuela Enos, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> director of Indigenous innovation, Chris Lee, director Academy for Creative Media-<abbr>UH<\/abbr> System, and Nurit Kirshenbaum, assistant professor at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Information and Computer Sciences.
