This marks the third consecutive year that <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> has topped half a billion dollars in funding with a record-setting total that is a $99.8 million or a 19.3&#37; increase over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/07\/20\/uh-sets-new-extramural-funding-record-fy2023\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s previous record of $515.9 million set in <abbr>FY<\/abbr> 2023<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Extramural funding is external investments from external agencies such as the federal government, industry and non-profit organizations that support research and training activities conducted by university faculty and staff. Extramural projects support research and innovation that helps to increase the knowledge base and provide solutions that impact the quality of life across <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and beyond.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_201687\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-201687\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/uh-extramural-funding-2024.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/uh-extramural-funding-2024-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"group shot\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-201687\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/uh-extramural-funding-2024-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/uh-extramural-funding-2024-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/uh-extramural-funding-2024.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-201687\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> leaders and faculty join congressional and state leaders to announce <abbr>UH<\/abbr>&#8216;s record extramural funding for <abbr>FY<\/abbr> 2024.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Setting back-to-back-to-back records in extramural funding is truly an impressive achievement for the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and our state,&rdquo; said <a href=\"https:\/\/research.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Vice President for Research and Innovation<\/a> Vassilis L. Syrmos. &ldquo;Our faculty, staff and students have once again answered the call with their hard work and dedication to grow the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> research enterprise, and at the same time, helping us to serve as a major contributor to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s economy.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Syrmos noted that <abbr>UH<\/abbr> research expenditures contribute to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s economy through business sales, employee earnings, state tax revenue and job creation; and serves as the main component in the diversification of the state\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the findings of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2021\/05\/23\/uh-impact-on-hawaii-economy\/\">2021 economic impact report published by the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Economic Research Organization<\/a>, $615 million in extramural funding is estimated to generate $947 million in total business sales, $434 million in employee earnings and $53 million in state tax revenue, and is currently supporting over 10,000 jobs (<abbr>UH<\/abbr> and <abbr>RCUH<\/abbr> employees)<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This steadily increasing investment in <abbr>UH<\/abbr> by external organizations, now totaling well over $1.5 billion dollars in the past three years, demonstrates global recognition of the greatness of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s public higher education system,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> President David Lassner. &ldquo;Every one of these dollars is a testament to the intellectual capacity and capability of our entire <abbr>UH<\/abbr> community to address the challenges and opportunities facing <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and our planet.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_185260\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-185260\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/hilo-nnalrc-grant-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"teacher and preschool students\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-185260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/hilo-nnalrc-grant-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/hilo-nnalrc-grant-1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/hilo-nnalrc-grant-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-185260\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo was awarded $2.3 million of a first-of-its-kind, $6.6 million grant to lead a three-university consortium to establish a National Native American Language Resource Center. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine awarded $4.1 million of a $27.1 million sub-award to the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.hawaii.edu\/oshi\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> System Office of Strategic Health Initiatives<\/a> to establish the Red Hill Independent Health Registry to provide direct support and resources to individuals impacted by the fuel spill and water crisis. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2024\/06\/20\/red-hill-health-registry\/\">More info in this <em><abbr>UH<\/abbr> News<\/em> story<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbrc.hawaii.edu\/\">Pacific Biosciences Research Center<\/a> received $4.2 million of a $11 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to establish an Integrative Center for Precision Nutrition and Human Health to foster more impactful and relevant research to communities most affected by nutrition-related health conditions.<\/li>\n<li>The National Science Foundation awarded a $824,999 grant to <a href=\"https:\/\/windward.hawaii.edu\/\">Windward Community College<\/a> for its collaborative proposal with multiple tribal colleges to advance cybersecurity education. Three consecutive years of topping half a billion dollars in extramural funding and this year, setting a record of $615.7<abbr>M<\/abbr>, is incredible. Having the best and the brightest researchers at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> boosts our state\u2019s economy and provides access to valuable insight and expertise in dealing with problems facing our community, like COVID-19, climate change, conservation and renewable energy. It also demonstrates to our young people, considering their futures, that coming to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> and staying in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> to advance their careers is indeed an option.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>U.S. Senator Brian Schatz<\/h2>\n[vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=&#8221;https:\/\/youtube.com\/shorts\/m5qviCynFXo&#8221; el_aspect=&#8221;169&#8243; align=&#8221;right&#8221; el_id=&#8221;wrap-video-right&#8221;][vc_column_text]\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>UH<\/abbr> is a world-class institution for research and higher education that\u2019s helping power <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s economy,&rdquo; said U.S. Senator Brian Schatz, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee. &ldquo;Our work to secure record federal funding for <abbr>UH<\/abbr> this year will help build a new Native language center in Hilo, support research on climate change and health disparities, improve educational programs across its ten campuses, and help strengthen the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> system for thousands of students and faculty.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono<\/h2>\n<p>&ldquo;This historic funding for the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System has supported a broad range of projects on <abbr>UH<\/abbr> campuses throughout the state, enabling <abbr>UH<\/abbr> faculty and students to do more cutting-edge research on issues critical to our state, our country, and our planet. This funding is a testament to <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s ambitious pursuit of competitive federal funding, and I\u2019ll continue working with my colleagues in the Congressional delegation to support federal funding for institutions across <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>U.S. Representative Ed Case (<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8212;First District)<\/h2>\n<p>&ldquo;This third straight year of record increase in federal and other extramural funding for the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> is very good news on several levels. First, it is a testament to <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s growing research and innovation talent and international recognition. Second, it reflects the advanced partnerships that <abbr>UH<\/abbr> has forged in successfully identifying and jointly pursuing funding opportunities including with our <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Congressional delegation. Third, it increases <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s contributions to our overall <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> economy in creating and expanding connected businesses and high-quality jobs. As good as this result is, there is plenty of room for continued growth on all levels as we all stay focused on further opportunities. But for now, great job <abbr>UH<\/abbr>!&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>U.S. Representative Jill Tokuda (<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8212;Second District)<\/h2>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>UH<\/abbr> has long been a research one (R1) university ranking among the country\u2019s elite institutions, but this new record level of extramural funding sets it apart in its ability to both perform and innovate.
