She is also expected to collaborate closely with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/pukoa\/\"><span aria-label=\"Pukoa\">P&#363;ko&#699;a<\/span> Council<\/a>, which is dedicated to increasing the representation of Native Hawaiian students, faculty, staff and administrators across the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> system to 23%, reflecting the percentage of Native Hawaiians in the state\u2019s general population.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This role is crucial for advancing the new Kuleana Imperative (of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/strategic-plan\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Âé¶¹´«Ã½ 2023&#8211;2029<\/a>) across all our 10 campuses,&rdquo; said Lassner. &ldquo;Punihei\u2019s proven dedication to embedding &#699;ike <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> (Hawaiian knowledge) and principles of aloha at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa will surely resonate throughout the entire system in this new position.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Advancing &#699;ike <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_200853\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-200853\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/system-hpoka-lipe-team-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Group photo\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-200853\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/system-hpoka-lipe-team-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/system-hpoka-lipe-team-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/system-hpoka-lipe-team.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-200853\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From left, front row: Paula MacCutcheon, Kaiwipuni Lipe, Pualalea Ryan, Tasha Ryan, Kawehion\u0101lani Goto; back row: Makanalani Gomes, Maylyn Magno-Gomes, Sofia Luczak, Katey Peck, Megumi Makino-Kanehiro, Eileen Nalley, Sean Dunnington<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Since 2017, Lipe has led the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/nhpol\/\">Native Hawaiian Place of Learning Advancement Office<\/a> (<abbr>NHPOL<\/abbr>) at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, where she has been instrumental in guiding the campus to reflect &#699;\u014dlelo <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, history and culture in an effort for all to learn, grow, connect and heal. She will continue to serve in that role as she takes on the <abbr>HPOKA<\/abbr> director responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The two positions align perfectly, and though we have a lot of work ahead here at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, it&#8217;s important that all of our campuses begin down the path of embracing the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> culture so that it informs and guides all that we do,&rdquo; said Lipe. &ldquo;Definitely, our work at <abbr>NHPOL<\/abbr> and the various efforts at all of the campuses provides a strong foundation for the work ahead.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>NHPOL<\/abbr> team launched <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/nhpol\/auamo\/cohort-kumukahi\/\">Cohort Kumukahi<\/a> in March 2024, a pioneering initiative to help M\u0101noa campus units develop five-year strategic plans for becoming a Native Hawaiian Place of Learning. The effort focuses on Native Hawaiian student success, staff and faculty development, Native Hawaiian environments, and community engagement, incorporating values and traditions such as mapping various <span aria-label=\"mookUauhau\">mo&#699;ok&#363;&#699;auhau<\/span> (genealogies that shape us) m\u0101lama &#699;\u0101ina (care for the land), oli (chants) and pilina (connection) circles.<\/p>\n<h2>Dynamic leader<\/h2>\n<p>Lipe also heads the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Truth, <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/nhpol\/trht\/\">Racial Healing, and Transformation Campus Center<\/a>, one of 50 centers across the U.S. dedicated to developing visionary action plans for advancing justice and building equitable communities.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, she was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2019\/11\/26\/obama-foundation-leaders\/\">among 200 emerging leaders from the Asia-Pacific region<\/a> selected for the Obama Foundation Leaders: Asia-Pacific Program.
