Established by the National Human Genome Research Institute (<abbr>NHGRI<\/abbr>), the <abbr>DCGR<\/abbr> Consortium aims to create centers dedicated to cutting-edge genomic research focusing on diverse populations and supporting the growth of genomic researchers at all levels.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blocklink\">Related <em><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> News<\/em> story: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/10\/10\/pacific-center-for-genome-research\/\"$10.9M to establish <abbr>Âé¶¹´«Ã½Pacific Center for Genome Research<\/a>, October 2023<\/span><\/p>\n<p><abbr>PCGR<\/abbr> is one of three such research centers funded by the <abbr>NIH<\/abbr> program&#8217;s first cohort in the fall of 2023. Led by Lang Wu of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhcancercenter.org\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Cancer Center<\/a> and Youping Deng of the <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a>, <abbr>PCGR<\/abbr> plays a pivotal role in enhancing genomic research capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Due to our unique geographic location and the diversity of communities we serve, our <abbr>PCGR<\/abbr> aims to substantially enhance the capabilities of conducting innovative genomic research in our underrepresented communities, especially the Native Hawaiian population,&rdquo; said Wu, <abbr>PCGR<\/abbr> director. &ldquo;We also aim to expand the pool of diverse genomic scientists and trainees by providing didactic, practicum, and research activities and experiences and strengthening community engagement efforts for genome research.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Planning for an equitable future<\/h2>\n<p>The meeting gathered researchers and leaders from five external Genome Centers and the <abbr>NHGRI<\/abbr> program director. It provided a platform for discussing the progress, challenges, and future plans of the <abbr>DCGR<\/abbr> program.
