Bottom row: From left, Kawika Riley and Gwen Yamamoto Lau.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>New members of the Climate Advisory Team (<abbr>CAT<\/abbr>) that was convened to give guidance for climate resilience and disaster recovery all have ties to the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. <abbr title=\"Governor\">Gov<\/abbr>. Josh Green announced the members of the <abbr>CAT<\/abbr> in July.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>CAT<\/abbr> is charged with developing policy recommendations to minimize the impacts of future climate-related natural disasters and to speed recovery from the physical and financial damage they cause. The team will make policy recommendations in anticipation of the 2025 <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> state legislative session through consultation with subject matter experts and community leaders.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>CAT<\/abbr> is led by Chris Benjamin, chair of Climate <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, a special advisor to the governor, former president and <abbr title=\"Chief Executive Officer\">CEO<\/abbr> of Alexander &#38; Baldwin <abbr title=\"Incorporated\">Inc<\/abbr>. and member of the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/shidler.hawaii.edu\/\">Shidler College of Business<\/a> Advisory Council.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>Gov<\/abbr>. Green and Chair Benjamin have added the following members to the <abbr>CAT<\/abbr>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Denise Antolini&#8212;professor of law emerita from the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/law.hawaii.edu\/\">William S. Richardson School of Law<\/a> with 30 years of environmental law experience.<\/li>\n<li>Robin Campaniano&#8212;<abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa alum, chairs the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Shidler College of Business Advisory Council, former insurance commissioner, former president\/<abbr>CEO<\/abbr> of <abbr>AIG<\/abbr> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Insurance Co.<\/li>\n<li>Chip Fletcher&#8212;interim dean of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> with extensive expertise in climate change, coastal community resiliency and sea level rise impacts.<\/li>\n<li>Kawika Riley&#8212;vice president of external affairs at Kupu who earned his <abbr title=\"Doctor of Philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> in <a href=\"https:\/\/politicalscience.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">political science<\/a> (Indigenous politics and law and policy) from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/li>\n<li>Gwen Yamamoto Lau&#8212;<abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa alumna who is executive director of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Green Infrastructure Authority and served on <abbr title=\"Environmental Protection Agency\">EPA<\/abbr>\u2019s Environmental Financial Advisory Board.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Maui wildfire devastation<\/h2>\n<p>As <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> continues to recover from the devastation caused by the historic Maui wildfire disaster, <abbr>Gov<\/abbr>. Green has emphasized the importance of climate resilience efforts. In convening the <abbr>CAT<\/abbr>, the governor reaffirmed his administration&#8217;s dedication to delivering a robust policy framework that prioritizes the well-being and security of residents, while effectively managing state resources for a sustainable and resilient future.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>CAT<\/abbr> includes local experts in climate, environmental stewardship and finance and insurance, who are dedicated to finding solutions that emphasize justice, equity and aloha <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;\u0101ina<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the <abbr>CAT<\/abbr> serve as unpaid volunteers and do not require Senate confirmation.<\/p>\n<h2>Legislative proposals<\/h2>\n<p>The <abbr>CAT<\/abbr> is engaging with a wide range of community stakeholders and experts to inform its work.
