The event included a design presentation and a mission demonstration, which consisted of autonomous flying, avoiding obstacles, detecting objects and an airdrop.<\/p>\n<p>More than 50 teams entered, and 36 qualified for the competition, including teams from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Turkey, India, Czech Republic, Norway, Italy, Canada and the U.S.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/manoa-engineering-drone-competition-before-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people gathered around a drone\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-200624\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/manoa-engineering-drone-competition-before-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/manoa-engineering-drone-competition-before-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/manoa-engineering-drone-competition-before.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I&#8217;m extremely proud of the team. We\u2019ve worked really hard to get to that point,&rdquo; said Leiolani Malagon Bracamontes Rodriguez, a senior <a href=\"https:\/\/me.hawaii.edu\/\">mechanical engineering<\/a> major and the team\u2019s project manager. &ldquo;Everyone knew exactly what we had to do, and what their goal and what their assignments were.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>This was the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Drone Technologies team&#8217;s fifth year competing. Its previous best finish came in 2017, when the team placed 3rd in the nation and 6th overall. The competition provides students with valuable hands-on experience in the rapidly evolving field of drone technology.<\/p>\n<h2>Springboard for careers<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/manoa-engineering-drone-competition-carl-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"person looking at a computer with a drone in the background\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-200625\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/manoa-engineering-drone-competition-carl-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/manoa-engineering-drone-competition-carl-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/manoa-engineering-drone-competition-carl.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Alex Tokunaga, a junior mechanical engineering student and hardware systems lead, is currently interning with Phillips Tank and Structure.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The experiences that I\u2019ve had on this team really helped out with my internship because you learn how to work with other people, whether it\u2019s different disciplines or within your own field, and that communication and those soft skills you learn really do help,&rdquo; Tokunaga said.<\/p>\n<p>Team advisor and <a href=\"https:\/\/ee.hawaii.edu\/home\/\">Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering<\/a> Chair Wayne Shiroma emphasized that the interdisciplinary nature of the project, combined with fundraising and sponsor interactions, offers students a comprehensive preview of industry experiences.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/manoa-engineering-drone-competition-drone-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"large drone on a bed of a truck\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-200627\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/manoa-engineering-drone-competition-drone-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/manoa-engineering-drone-competition-drone-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/manoa-engineering-drone-competition-drone.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This experience provided our students with an unparalleled opportunity to apply their engineering knowledge to real-world challenges in drone technology,&rdquo; Shiroma said. &ldquo;Beyond the technical aspects, they gain crucial skills in teamwork, project management, and communication, all while competing on an international stage.
