  {"id":19987,"date":"2013-10-01T10:44:39","date_gmt":"2013-10-01T20:44:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=19987"},"modified":"2021-11-18T10:33:51","modified_gmt":"2021-11-18T20:33:51","slug":"uh-seeks-nominations-for-student-veterans-task-force","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2013\/10\/01\/uh-seeks-nominations-for-student-veterans-task-force\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> seeks nominations for student veterans task force"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p>University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Interim President <strong>David Lassner<\/strong> is looking for Âé¶¹´«Ã½staff, faculty, community members, government officials, Âé¶¹´«Ã½veteran students and graduates interested in working together to recommend how to improve services for the Âé¶¹´«Ã½System student veterans.<\/p>\n<p>At a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2013\/09\/24\/u-s-department-of-veterans-affairs-and-uh-announce-new-services\/\">joint news conference on September 24<\/a>, Lassner and Secretary of the U.S. Veterans Administration General (retired) Eric Shinseki announced their plan to appoint a new <abbr>UH<\/abbr> task force to provide recommendations on how Âé¶¹´«Ã½campuses across the state can better support veteran students.<\/p>\n<p>Nominations and self-nominations for task force members should be <a href=\"mailto:president@hawaii.edu\">emailed to the president&#8217;s office<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lassner noted that, &ldquo;We owe all of our veterans a path to a high-quality degree that will help them find rewarding employment. But just as importantly, we owe it to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> as well. Veterans have a wealth of talent and expertise to share if we are successful in providing them with higher education experiences that enable them to obtain great jobs and thrive in our communities.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our talented student veterans here in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> will soon enter the labor force. Not only do veterans make exceptional employees, who possess character, team building skills and discipline, but they also bring with them exceptional leadership,&rdquo; Shinseki said.<\/p>\n<p>All <abbr>UH<\/abbr> campuses already provide some level of support services for veterans. The university&#8217;s 10-campus system currently enrolls more than 2,400 veterans who comprise some 4 percent of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> student body.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the nominations received, the task force will be appointed by the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> president.<\/p>\n<p>Once appointed, the task force will be charged to develop a set of coherent recommendations on how <abbr>UH<\/abbr> campuses can learn from each other and do even more for veteran students by working together.<\/p>\n<p>The task force will review and catalog current <abbr>UH<\/abbr> capabilities and programs relative to best practices, survey veteran students and graduates to understand their use and perceptions of Âé¶¹´«Ã½veteran services, identify systemwide approaches to collecting and utilizing data to inform the extent and success of veterans&#8217; participation at Âé¶¹´«Ã½and provide recommendations for priority actions across the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System that will improve the educational access and success of veteran students at <abbr>UH<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>For the past two years <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa has hosted and coordinated a systemwide conference each spring on service to veterans.
