The competition has two elements: the design and flight readiness presentation, and the mission demonstration. The presentation portion assesses a team\u2019s <abbr>UAS<\/abbr> design and the team\u2019s testing and preparedness, and the demonstration portion simulates a mission (consisting of autonomous flight, obstacle avoidance, object detection and airdrop).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_199718\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-199718\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/manoa-engineering-drone-competition-drone-shot-working-on-drone-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people working on a drone\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-199718\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/manoa-engineering-drone-competition-drone-shot-working-on-drone-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/manoa-engineering-drone-competition-drone-shot-working-on-drone-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/manoa-engineering-drone-competition-drone-shot-working-on-drone.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-199718\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students working on the drone<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>More than 50 teams entered, and 36 qualified for the competition, including teams from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Turkey, India, Czech Republic, Norway, Italy, Canada and the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>This is the fifth year the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Drone Technologies team is participating. Its best finish was 6th in 2017 (3rd among U.S. teams), and the team aims to place higher this year.<\/p>\n<p>Leiolani Malagon Bracamontes Rodriguez, a senior <a href=\"https:\/\/me.hawaii.edu\/\">mechanical engineering<\/a> major, is the program manager for the 36-student team and is one of the seven students traveling to the competition.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Just because we\u2019re not from the mainland or we\u2019re not from a bigger state, doesn\u2019t mean that we don&#8217;t have brilliant minds here at <abbr>UH<\/abbr>,&rdquo; Bracamontes Rodriguez said. &ldquo;Being able to go and represent <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> in general&#8212;because we\u2019re the only one from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> going&#8212;it&#8217;s a great opportunity and we&#8217;re very fortunate.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Carl Domingo, a spring 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/ee.hawaii.edu\/home\/\">computer engineering<\/a> graduate who is also on the traveling team, will begin working as a nuclear engineer at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard following the competition.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;A lot of people should be proud of what we do,&rdquo; Domingo said. &ldquo;We don&#8217;t just build drones just for fun. There are some real-world applications of what we do.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Importance of drones<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_199719\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-199719\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/manoa-engineering-drone-competition-drone-flying-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"drone flying in the air\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-199719\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/manoa-engineering-drone-competition-drone-flying-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/manoa-engineering-drone-competition-drone-flying-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/manoa-engineering-drone-competition-drone-flying.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-199719\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Drone test flight<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><abbr>UAS<\/abbr>, commonly known as drones, contribute to efficiency, safety and innovation across various sectors, including agriculture, construction, infrastructure inspection, emergency response, environmental monitoring, delivery services and more, Shiroma said.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Unmanned aerial systems have been increasingly important,&rdquo; said Wayne Shiroma, the team\u2019s advisor and <a href=\"https:\/\/ee.hawaii.edu\/home\/\">Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering<\/a> chair and professor. &ldquo;Amazon has used them for package delivery. <abbr title=\"National Aeronautics and Space Administration\">NASA<\/abbr> is currently using <abbr>UAS<\/abbr>\u2019s for wildfire detection.
