Venerable Kou Sopheap and Venerable Hak Sienghai traveled from Cambodia, joined by Venerable Sok Theavy, a resident monk on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island toured the M&#257;noa campus and delivered a webinar for both in-person and virtual audiences.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/manoa-cseas-buddhist-monks-peace-buddha.jpg\" alt=\"Buddha statue\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-199549\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/manoa-cseas-buddhist-monks-peace-buddha.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/manoa-cseas-buddhist-monks-peace-buddha-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/manoa-cseas-buddhist-monks-peace-buddha-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hosted by the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cseashawaii.org\/\">Center for Southeast Asian Studies<\/a> (<abbr>CSEAS<\/abbr>), the hybrid webinar at <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/library\/\">Hamilton Library <\/a>explored Buddhism\u2019s role in Cambodia\u2019s recovery from conflict, reflecting on its absence during the Khmer Rouge regime and the subsequent peace efforts since 1992. They shared the importance of non-violence, and problem-solving in an effort to demonstrate how ancient wisdom can address modern challenges.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I believe these conversations about mindfulness and peace need to be more prevalent on campus,&rdquo; said Sothy Eng, a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa associate professor in <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/Majors\/HDFS\">human development and family studies<\/a>. &ldquo;Raising awareness through such discussions is important for our campus community.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The monks also met with leaders from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastwestcenter.org\/\">East-West Center<\/a> (<abbr>EWC<\/abbr>).
