Shidler have gifted a sculpture by the late Bumpei Akaji to their alma mater. The sculpture, &ldquo;<abbr title=\"Residences for Innovative Student Entrepreneurs\">RISE<\/abbr>,&rdquo; was installed outside the Walter Dods, <abbr>Jr<\/abbr>. <abbr>RISE<\/abbr> Center, and dedicated in a special ceremony prior to the official grand opening of the center on June 15.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/manoa-shidler-pace-dods-akaji-sculpture-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"large sculpture\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-199397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/manoa-shidler-pace-dods-akaji-sculpture-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/manoa-shidler-pace-dods-akaji-sculpture-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/manoa-shidler-pace-dods-akaji-sculpture.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The sculpture &ldquo;RISE&rdquo; was created in 1979 by <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>-born artist Bumpei Akaji as a gift for the late Masaru &ldquo;Pundy&rdquo; Yokouchi, founding chairperson of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. Dods and Shidler purchased the sculpture from Yokouchi\u2019s estate on Maui. Dods named it &ldquo;<abbr>RISE<\/abbr>&rdquo; with permission from Yokouchi\u2019s family.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I thought it&#8217;d be cool to name it <abbr>RISE<\/abbr>, and bringing it back to Metcalf Street is just incredible,&rdquo; Dods said.<\/p>\n<p>Akaji was one of seven local artists who attended <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa after World War <abbr title=\"Roman numeral two\">II<\/abbr> and lived at the &ldquo;Metcalf Chateau,&rdquo; an old house they rented in the 1950s on Metcalf Street, a short distance away from the <abbr>RISE<\/abbr> Center. Akaji, who was a member of the famed 442nd Regimental Combat Team during the war, stayed in Italy to study painting and sculpture before returning to attend <abbr>UH<\/abbr> and became one of the first to earn a master\u2019s in fine arts degree from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa in 1952.<\/p>\n<h2><abbr>RISE<\/abbr> grand opening<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/manoa-shidler-pace-dods-rise-grand-opening-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people sitting in a large room\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-199399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/manoa-shidler-pace-dods-rise-grand-opening-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/manoa-shidler-pace-dods-rise-grand-opening-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/manoa-shidler-pace-dods-rise-grand-opening.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>RISE<\/abbr> building was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/10\/08\/walter-dods-5m-donation-rise\/\">named for Dods in honor of his gift of $5 million<\/a>, which supports the <abbr>RISE<\/abbr> programs operated by the <a href=\"https:\/\/pace.shidler.hawaii.edu\/\">Pacific Asian Center for Entrepreneurship<\/a> (<abbr>PACE<\/abbr>) at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/shidler.hawaii.edu\/\">Shidler College of Business<\/a>. The student entrepreneurship and innovation center with housing for 374 students opened in August 2023.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>RISE<\/abbr> was built under a public-private partnership between <abbr>UH<\/abbr>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Foundation<\/a> and Hunt Companies <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Foundation recently moved its headquarters to the second and third floors of the Charles Atherton House at <abbr>RISE<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This project is such a powerful example of what can happen when we innovate in our thinking and embrace creative partnerships to re-imagine our state\u2019s future,&rdquo; said <abbr title=\"Governor\">Gov<\/abbr>. Josh Green, <abbr title=\"medical doctor\">MD<\/abbr>. &ldquo;These projects serve as an example that there is a way to improve facilities without relying solely on taxpayer dollars, and in <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s case, tuition monies.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are proud that <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Foundation is a partner in this groundbreaking project that will nurture and inspire generations of student entrepreneurs,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Foundation <abbr title=\"Chief Executive Officer\">CEO<\/abbr> Tim Dolan. &ldquo;We\u2019re excited we get to work here in this historic building and grateful we get to admire this wonderful gift from Walter and Jay, the sculpture by Bumpei Akaji, every day.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>PACE<\/abbr> Board Chair Susan Yamada noted that her first trip to the University of Utah\u2019s Lassonde Studios, which served as the model for <abbr>RISE<\/abbr>, was just seven years ago.
