That\u2019s when a group of <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> administrators started laying the foundation for the project that would help the 10-campus system meet its January 1, 2035 net-zero energy goal (producing as much as energy as consumed).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_199096\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-199096\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/west-oahu-solar-building-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"People walking toward buildings\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-199096\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/west-oahu-solar-building-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/west-oahu-solar-building-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/west-oahu-solar-building.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-199096\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>AES<\/abbr> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Solar + Storage Grand Opening<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;I don\u02bbt think people fully realize what it took to get to this point,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Vice President for Administration (<abbr>VPA<\/abbr>) Jan Gouveia. &ldquo;The moral of the story is that if you don\u2019t start something now, you are not going to get something by 2035.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The facility, built and operated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aes-hawaii.com\/hawaii\"><abbr>AES<\/abbr> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a>, is generating 12.5 megawatts of clean energy and is supported by a 50 megawatt hour battery energy storage system. It is operating under a 25-year power purchase agreement with Hawaiian Electric Co. (HECO) and is reducing fossil fuel use on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> by 750,000 barrels of oil.<\/p>\n<h2>Once upon a time, in 2015<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_199098\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-199098\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/system-solar-gouveia-topping-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Two people sitting at a conference table\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-199098\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/system-solar-gouveia-topping-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/system-solar-gouveia-topping-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/system-solar-gouveia-topping.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-199098\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jan Gouveia and Miles Topping<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>HECO issued a Request For Information (<abbr>RFI<\/abbr>) for the project in 2015, a few months after Miles Topping was hired as the Director of Sustainability. That\u02bbs when Topping brought the idea of using <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> lands for the project to Gouveia.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Without Miles initially approaching us about this project, it never would have happened,&rdquo; said Gouveia. &ldquo;It then takes the staying power of key people over nine years to make something like this finally happen in 2024.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The key people were Topping, Gouveia, <abbr>VPA<\/abbr> special assistant Carol Takahashi and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> attorney Bruce Matsui, who started meeting biweekly. Their early milestones included submitting <abbr>UH<\/abbr> lands to non binding HECO Land Request For Information, Board of Regent approval for Letter Of Intent (<abbr>LOI<\/abbr>) and Use and Occupancy (<abbr>U<\/abbr>&#38;<abbr>O<\/abbr>) real estate agreement, and issuing the <abbr>LOI<\/abbr> and <abbr>U<\/abbr>&#38;<abbr>O<\/abbr> to potential developers.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The regents in 2018 really deserve a lot of credit for their willingness to venture a little outside of their comfort zone by approving a long-term agreement with an entity that was unknown at the time,&rdquo; said Gouveia. &ldquo;When you are trying to do something that has never been done before, you have to have the fortitude to do what it takes to make it happen.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>After <abbr>AES<\/abbr> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> was awarded the bid in 2018, Nick Molinari from the energy company was added to the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> team.
