It will provide information and access to internships and career opportunities in cybersecurity. <abbr>UH<\/abbr> faculty will work with the students and provide mentoring and guidance through the process.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> was selected to receive $1 million in grant funding and wraparound support from <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberclinics.withgoogle.com\/\">Google\u2019s Cybersecurity Clinics Fund<\/a> to establish the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Cybersecurity Clinics. It is one of 15 new clinics set to launch at higher education institutions across the country, thanks to a collaboration between Google and the <a href=\"https:\/\/cybersecurityclinics.org\/\">Consortium of Cybersecurity Clinics<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/cybersecurity-gnrc-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"hand typing at laptop and icons across photo\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-198763\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/cybersecurity-gnrc-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/cybersecurity-gnrc-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/cybersecurity-gnrc.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Cybersecurity clinics at higher education institutions provide free digital security services to under-resourced organizations, similar to how law or medical schools offer free community clinics,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer Garret Yoshimi. &ldquo;<abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s new cybersecurity clinics will give students an opportunity to learn cybersecurity and artificial intelligence (<abbr>AI<\/abbr>) skills in a hands-on manner, while helping to protect vulnerable organizations and critical infrastructure\u2014such as local small businesses, hospitals, schools and energy grids\u2014from cyber attacks.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Currently, there are nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyberseek.org\/heatmap.html\">450,000 open cybersecurity jobs<\/a> available in the U.S., including more than 4,000 in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, and demand for cyber professionals is projected to grow 32&#37; by 2033. Cyber insecurity remains one of the top 10 global risks over the next 10 years, according to the World Economic Forum&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/publications\/global-risks-report-2024\/\">2024 Global Risks Report<\/a>. To ensure that communities, critical infrastructure and businesses big and small across the U.S. are secure, a skilled, diverse and <abbr>AI<\/abbr> savvy cybersecurity workforce is required.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The world is in a moment where emerging technologies, like <abbr>AI<\/abbr>, are creating both new opportunities and threats in the world of cybersecurity,&rdquo; said Heather Adkins, vice president of security engineering at Google. &ldquo;It\u2019s essential that we invest in growing a strong, diverse and widespread cybersecurity workforce to help protect everyone\u2014from critical infrastructure to small businesses and schools. The 15 clinics that we\u2019re helping to establish serve a wide variety of students across all corners of the U.S. and we\u2019re excited to see the impact they\u2019ll have in their local communities.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Cybersecurity Clinics will be primarily based at <a href=\"https:\/\/maui.hawaii.edu\/cybersecurity\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Maui College<\/a> but will collaborate with other campuses throughout the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System. The project will also work with various organizations across the state, such as the <abbr title=\"Chief Information Officer\">CIO<\/abbr> Council and local employers, to train workers to secure the critical infrastructure in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to $1 million, Google is offering volunteer mentorship from Google employees, <a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/titan-security-key\">Google Titan Security Keys<\/a> (hardware passkeys that use two-factor authentication to protect Google accounts from phishing attacks and hacking), and scholarships for the <a href=\"https:\/\/grow.google\/certificates\/cybersecurity\/?utm_source=google&#038;utm_medium=blog&#038;utm_campaign=cyber__geo--US&#038;utm_content=#?modal_active=none\">Google Career Certificate in Cybersecurity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Google&#8217;s transformative investment is catalyzing cybersecurity for the public good,&rdquo; says Ann Cleaveland, co-founder and co-chair of the Consortium of Cybersecurity Clinics and executive director of the UC Berkeley Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity. &ldquo;We congratulate the recipients and applaud these awards, which propel forward the vision of the Consortium to establish a cybersecurity clinic in every U.S. state by 2030.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The announcement builds on Google\u2019s 2023 support for 10 clinics, part of a combined commitment to launch 25 Google-supported cyber clinics nationwide by 2025.
