The Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems<\/a> (PISCES) at the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo is hosting the eighth annual Women’s STARS (STEM Aerospace Research Scholars) Program<\/a> this summer. The free immersive program welcomes high school girls interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM<\/abbr>) and aims to inspire them to pursue STEM<\/abbr>-related studies and careers.<\/p>\n

STARS is scheduled during the week of July 15–19, and interested students are encouraged to apply by June 9<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Participants will engage in a diverse range of activities such as exclusive behind-the-scenes tours at leading science facilities, hands-on workshops covering coding and technology, and presentations by accomplished women in STEM<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n

“STARS is all about showing young women what\u2019s possible for their futures,” said STARS coordinator Chris Yoakum. “We aim to foster a supportive environment where students can explore their interests, connect with mentors and mentorship opportunities, and learn about what STEM careers are really like from women who work in them.”<\/p>\n

STARS is open to Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> high school girls ages 14 and up and is offered at no cost to participants. Meals, accommodations, and on-island transportation are all covered.<\/p>\n

“We want to eliminate barriers and provide equal access to STEM education,” Yoakum said. “Our hope is that participants leave the program with a new perspective and inspiration to pursue their dreams.”<\/p>\n

Pisces is housed in UH<\/abbr> Hilo\u2019s College of Natural and Health Sciences<\/a>.<\/p>\n
