Aquaculture is the farming of aquatic life, such as fish and shellfish, in controlled environments like ponds or tanks. Haws is based at the university\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/pacrc\/about.php\">Pacific Aquaculture and Coastal Resource Center<\/a> (<abbr>PACRC<\/abbr>) in Keaukaha, Hilo Bay.<\/p>\n<p>According to Haws, the gap in key information is due to the highly diverse nature of production methods, systems, and species that are cultured in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. Aquaculture spans from breeding shrimp in land-based systems to farming hamachi (k&#257;hala) in open-ocean cages. However, current studies fail to capture the economic dynamics of these diverse regions.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and the U.S.-affiliated Pacific Islands have relatively weak capacity for aquaculture economics since there are no dedicated aquaculture economists, although some economic specialists contribute to research in this area,&rdquo; Haws said. &ldquo;Results from this work, as well as the relationships developed through the consortium, will help compensate for this.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> expertise<\/h2>\n<p><abbr>PACRC<\/abbr> will lead the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> component of the project and develop educational materials, online tools for industry and other users, and assist with farm economic studies.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_197984\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-197984\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/hilo-research-aquaculture-oyster-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"hand holding an oyster\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-197984\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/hilo-research-aquaculture-oyster-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/hilo-research-aquaculture-oyster-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/hilo-research-aquaculture-oyster.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-197984\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo aquaculture technician holding an oyster.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Diverse collaboration<\/h2>\n<p>Project collaborators are a geographically diverse group of economists and extension specialists with backgrounds in freshwater, coastal, marine, and recirculating aquaculture systems.
