In response to the interconnectedness of climate change and nature loss, a University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Mānoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources<\/a> (CTAHR<\/abbr>) assistant professor joined a new federal initiative to carry out the first National Nature Assessment (NNA1<\/abbr>) in April.<\/p>\n

Ashley Lowe-Mackenzie of the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management<\/a> will co-write a chapter in this historic attempt to take stock of U.S. lands, waters, wildlife, and the benefits provided to our economy, health, climate, environmental justice and national security.<\/p>\n

“I am honored to be a part of the first ever National Nature Assessment!” Lowe-Mackenzie said. “It is a unique opportunity to be involved in the public discussion around our deep dependency on our natural environment. I encourage those interested in this work to please reach out to me.”<\/p>\n

Lowe-Mackenzie\u2019s Nature and the Economy<\/em> chapter will focus on economic activities, infrastructure and employment that are directly or indirectly related to nature, and explore how changes in nature affect economic benefits, risks and opportunities.<\/p>\n

The report presents a significant opportunity for communities in Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> to have their voices heard and their perspectives valued in shaping the NNA1<\/abbr>. Lowe-Mackenzie hopes her participation will reflect the needs and aspirations of Native Hawaiian communities and contribute to their well-being and resilience in the face of climate change.<\/p>\n
